High Power Laser Sensor with Fast Response Time

MKS Instruments, Inc. has announced the Ophir 20K-W High Power Laser Sensor, a compact sensor for measuring high power lasers.

This water-cooled thermal sensor measures powers from 100W to 20 kW over the spectral range of 800 to 2,000 nm and 10.6 µm. A deflecting cone and annular absorber allow the sensor to withstand high power densities to 10 kW/sq. cm. The sensor delivers a fast 3.5 sec response time, shortening the time required for measurement. A large 55 mm aperture is insensitive to beam size or angle of divergence, which means greater flexibility when manipulating beams and more consistent power delivery even when the input beam changes slightly in size or direction. The sensor features a number of safety features that protect the sensor as well as operators. Designed for high power laser manufacturers and industrial applications such as cutting, the 20K-W sensor offers accurate and repeatable power measurements, reducing scrap and improving yield, the company reported.

The Ophir 20K-W High Power Sensor features an interlock output that shuts down the laser to protect the sensor from overheating, whether due to low water flow availability or use of laser powers higher than specifications. This reduces the risk of damage to the sensor and helps ensure operator safety. Low backscatter also enhances safety by minimizing harmful reflections. The sensor's water circuit is designed to reach approved water flow rates with lower pressure requirements. The sensor also features an over-temperature sensor that triggers an LED indicator, audible alarm and M8 three-connector interlock to protect the system from low water flow or flow stoppage.

Like all Ophir sensors, the 20K-W High Power Sensor includes a "Smart Connector" interface that operates with the company's Centauri, StarBright, StarLite and other Ophir smart displays; Juno and Juno+ compact USB PC interfaces; Juno-RS, Pulsar and Quasar virtual power and energy meters; and EA-1 Ethernet adapter. Data can be displayed in a variety of formats, including Digital with Bargraph, Line Plot, Pulse Chart and Real Time Statistics. The displays also feature sophisticated logging of power and energy, statistics, histograms, advanced math functions and more. Each display is automatically configured and calibrated when plugged into one of the company's laser measurement heads.
