Mazak recently demonstrated the machining and joining capabilities of its VTC-300C FSW (FRICTION STIR WELDING) HYBRID multi-tasking machine at IMTS 2018.
Designed and manufactured in Kentucky, the VTC-300C vertical machining center (VMC) features Mazak's MAZATROL SmoothG CNC, a 40-taper spindle, full traveling-column design and a fixed table for the machining of long and heavy workpieces. The FSW package adds friction stir welding capability to the spindle via a specially designed toolholder. "When combined with closed-loop FSW process control and FSW programming software, users can realize the benefits of joining operations combined with conventional subtractive machining, often on the same set-up," said a company spokesperson.
"FSW is a solid-state joining process that uses frictional heat and forging pressure to create full-penetration, defect-free welded joints with greater strength than conventional welding methods," said the spokesperson. The process utilizes a non-consumable tool to join two metal plates without melting the workpiece. Commonly considered a forging process, FSW is suited for joining alloys with low melting points, including aluminum, copper and brass, among others.
