VMCs in Twin and Single Spindle Versions

CHIRON has developed a new range of VMCs, the DZ16 W and the FZ16 S. These 5-axis machines, available in twin and single spindle versions, are designed to add extreme stiffness and greater stability to the package, allowing the machines to take heavy cuts in difficult material while maintaining accuracy.

"Combining high precision metal removal with high feedrates yields a machine that can hog material while delivering high quality surfaces," said a company spokesperson. This capability is suited for the pump, compressor, aerospace components, mold and die and automotive industries that produce complex parts from high alloy and exotic metals such as titanium, Inconel and stainless steels. The ability to produce finished parts rapidly in a single set-up saves cycle time and avoids the need for secondary operations.

The DZ offers 200 Nm of spindle torque and features a high Kv rating (a measure of the stiffness and accuracy of the drive) of 4-4-6 in the X, Y and Z axes. The machine can drive drills to 60 mm diameter and has a milling capability of up to 900 cu. cm, due to heavy depth of cut. Rapid traverse is 600, 600, 1,000 m/sec, X, Y, Z, acceleration is 12, 12 and 14 m/s2 in X, Y and Z axes, adding speed to the power of the new machine.

Workpieces are mounted in two two-position fixtures, each mounted on trunnions on opposite sides of a rotary work changer, providing the fourth axis. As one pair of workpieces is being machined, the other pair can be loaded manually or with automation from the easy-access front of the machine, losing no production time.

The work-changing speed of the machines and CHIRON's fast tool change, just over 2 seconds, plus 2x80 tool changer capacity mean the machines can handle low lot sizes - a plus for future production planning in many industries.

"Key developments for this series of Chiron machines-providing greater stability for the heavier cuts and the rapid axis positioning-are due to the gantry-style construction rather than a C-frame. This construction will be seen in future CHIRON Group machines," said a company spokesperson. The base is a vibration-dampening, stable concrete material that is less sensitive to heat than cast iron or steel weldments. Even during heavy cuts, the machine runs nearly without vibration or noise.
