Cincinnati Event Offered Metrology Demonstrations, Technical Presentations

Co-owners of Exact Metrology Steve Young (center) and Dean Solberg (right) cut the ribbon to begin the day.

Various pieces of metrology equipment were displayed and demonstrated, including the company's new GE CT Scanner, the first such machine used in North America for metrology, according to the company.

The new AutoScan Collaborative Gauge from Perceptron is designed to combine robotic scanning and data capture online.

On May 27, Exact Metrology had its ribbon-cutting and open house at its new facility in Cincinnati, OH. The event was attended by more than 150 local area companies, including quality assessment, design engineering and management personnel from many manufacturers in the region. Hosted by company Co-Presidents Steve Young and Dean Solberg, the event included ongoing product demonstrations of the various metrology equipment brands and testing procedures offered by Exact. "A highlight of the event was the company's new GE CT Scanner, the first such scanner being used in North America for metrology," said a company spokesperson. "CT scanning technology has long been established as a medical investigatory procedure."

Also on display for the first time at Exact was the AutoScan from Perceptron, which is designed to bring 3D scanning, dimensional measurement and dimensional gauging to the shop floor, combining robotic technology with the company's helix smart scanning sensor technology.

Services on display at the open house included 3D scanning, reverse engineering, quality inspection, instant scan-to-CAD comparison and a full suite of PolyWorks software solutions. Equipment shown at the event included Aicon 3D systems, Breuckmann 3D scanners, Leica Geosystems, Romer and Hexagon brands of scanning devices and related hardware, all of which were available for hands-on use by event attendees. Company representatives from the various equipment lines, as well as Exact Metrology's team of application engineering and testing specialists, were present for demonstrations and technical presentations throughout the event.

"A new product of great interest to attendees was the Breuckmann steroScan, a flexible scanning system for precise 3D digitization and metrology," said the spokesperson. "Applications for this product include quality inspection, reverse engineering, rapid prototyping, deformation analysis and digital documentation. Because of the adjustable focal length of the scanner, products from small components up to large sections of automotive and aircraft parts can be scanned with high resolution and accuracy."

"We constantly seek to find the optimum combination of equipment and services to suit the applications and challenges presented by our customers," said Young. "In some cases, it is a matter of matching the right standard equipment to the job, while at other times we bring custom solutions and services to our customers, whether they buy, lease or rent equipment or use our services to achieve the desired results on their metrology projects." According to Young, the new facility will enable Exact to perform testing procedures on much larger workpieces as well as conduct more extensive training and educational events.

"Exact serves both industrial and commercial concerns, ranging from heavy equipment, automotive and appliance companies to nuclear test facilities and even museums, who routinely use metrology to examine artwork such as paintings and sculpture," said the spokesperson.

One visitor at the event was sculptor Tom Tsuchiya. According to the company, Tsuchiya often uses Exact Metrology's services to scan his models in 3D; then he provides the data files to his foundry, where the bronze castings are made.

Exact Metrology is an ISO 9001:2008 Certified Company. Demonstrations may be arranged by contacting the company.
