Production Lathes Feature Up to 0.2 um Concentricity

The G-series of DMG MORI WASINO includes the GG-5, the G-06 and the G-07 (shown) covering workpiece sizes from ø 1.97" x 1.58" to ø 3.94" x 3.94".

In contrast to the J-1, the JJ-1 is equipped with two spindles and two turrets.

On April 1, 2015, DMG MORI USA took over the lathe division of Amada Machine Tools CO., Ltd. known under the brand name WASINO. The compact WASINO lathes are designed for the production turning of ultra-high-precision parts from the automotive, aerospace, medical and electrics industries. According to the company, a high level of process integration allows complete machining on one machine.

WASINO, in its 75 years of experience developed and produced compact, high-precision lathes for the productive manufacture of automobile parts and components for the optics industry. The portfolio ranges from universal machines to special productions with which the company can respond to individual customer requirements. Although the production lathes from WASINO have focused primarily on the Japanese market to date, the takeover of the AMADA lathe business division by DMG MORI will provide these technologies on an international level.

"While the production lathes from WASINO fit ideally into its extensive portfolio, DMG MORI will be able to increase the importance of the brand significantly through its global sales, engineering and service network," said a company spokesperson. In the future, DMG MORI will further develop and build the machines in Nara, Japan.

The high-tech product program from DMG MORI WASINO includes three series: the G-series, J-series and A-series.

G-Series

"Due to their robust construction and low center of gravity, the lathes in the G-series are designed especially for high thermal stability," said the spokesperson. "The temperature response is just 2 um at cold start. The versatile machine concept enables both heavy-duty machining of sophisticated workpieces as well as subsequent finishing in the high-precision range. Circularity here is up to 0.2 um. With such features the G-series proves a valuable instrument in the machining of chucked components for the automotive industry."

The G-series includes the GG-5, the G-06 and the G-07, which together cover workpiece sizes from ø 1.97" x 1.58" to ø 3.94" x 3.94". In addition, the G-06 and G-07 can be used for the machining of bars with a diameter of 1.500". Spindle speeds are between 4,000 and 8,000 RPM depending on the model. The G-07M's turret can accommodate a tool with a speed of 5,000 RPM, which makes milling operations possible.

According to the company, highlights of the G-series include:

  • CNC high precision lathes with linear toolholders for shorter idle times and enhanced rigidity
  • High degree of productivity due to fast linear toolholders with < 1 sec. chip-to-chip time for large lot sizes
  • Ideal for hard turning due to linear holders with a high level of rigidity - finishing in sequential production processes.

J-Series

Due to their compact design, the models in the J-series can be utilized in the field of production turning. The J-1 and JJ-1 are especially useful in the production of small precision parts. Here too, the machine concept is geared towards a high level of thermal stability. Thermal displacement for cold starts is maximum ø 5 um; true running accuracy maximum 0.5 um.

The diameter of the standard version of the J-1 is 3.15" with up to 6.30" possible depending on the tool design. It has travel paths of 3.94" x 0.87" in the X and Z direction. Eight tool pockets enable machining of complex precision parts. There is also an additional tailstock available for shaft machining. In contrast to the J-1, the JJ-1 is equipped with two spindles and two turrets. This concept enables reductions in throughput times since both the front and rear sides can be machined in a single run. The turning diameter of this version is ø 1.97".

According to the company, highlights of the J-series include:

  • Short set-up times due to stable 8-pocket turret with 2 sec. chip-to-chip time
  • Vibration-free shaft machining on the J1 possible due to its integrated tailstock as option with 2.76" stroke
  • Free chip flow directly downwards, no chip accumulation due to toolholder as turret
  • Maximum accuracy of up to 0.5 um circularity and 4 um temperature response at cold start in the case of the J-1 (JJ-1: 0.5 / 4 um)
  • Minimum footprint: J-1 features 56.62 sq. ft. including automation, and JJ-1 57.80 sq. ft. including automation.

A-Series

The DMG MORI WASINO A-series has compact lathes in its portfolio that are equipped with a large number of tool pockets and that with the aid of driven tools allow the integration of both turning and milling operations. According to the company, these lathes increase the value creation of a product, especially where the manufacture of complex, high-precision turn-mill parts is concerned. Optional equipment features and possible automation also mean the machines can be customized to adapt them to the respective production environment.

The A-18S has space for up to 18 driven tools with torques up to 10,000 RPM. Its AD-18S sister model features 15 tool pockets and is equipped for complete machining with a counter-spindle and a second turret has space for another eight tools. The turning diameter of both models is ø 1.97" and the max. workpiece size is ø 9.45" x 9.65". The A-18S and the AD-18S also offer generous travel paths of 7.09" x 3.94" x 13.78" in the X, Y and Z direction.

Highlights of the A-18S and AD-18S include:

  • Eighteen-pocket turret for the machining of highly complex workpieces with diameters measuring up 4.72" x 3.15"
  • AD-18S features integrated rear-side machining (OP 20) due to the use of a counter-spindle on the turret, 15 tools and counter-spindle on turret one
  • Eight tools on turret two for OP 20
  • Accuracy of 0.8 um circularity and 4 um temperature response at cold start
  • Footprint including automation and chip conveyor is 7.25 sq. m.
