Advanced Machining Showcases New Facility and Technology

Advanced Machining expands its 5-axis capabilities.

Bobby Miller, left, Vice President of Operations, explains machinery at open house.

Advanced Machining, LLC, a Salisbury, NC, company that provides CNC precision machining and tool making services for OEM customers, recently hosted an open house at it new facility. Advanced Machining specializes in prototype and short- to intermediate-run production for industries such as power generation, aerospace, medical, defense and automotive. The open house was sponsored in part by RowanWORKS Economic Development.

The open house allowed current and potential customers, community leaders and other dignitaries to meet the Advanced Machining staff and tour the new 10,000 sq. ft. facility. Visitors were able to see machining and measuring equipment used to produce tooling, prototypes and production parts.

The company also showed its latest high-speed machining center for precision metalworking operations, the GF AgieCharmilles MIKRON HSM 400U, a highly automated, 5-axis machine tool.

Keith Felts, President, and Bobby Miller, Vice President of Operations, partnered to form Advanced Machining in 1985 to provide advanced technology machining services to a variety of industries. Initially, the company specialized in the electrical discharge machining (EDM) process, but soon evolved to offer additional processing technologies such as high-speed milling and 5-axis machining.

In 2011, Advanced Machining was partially acquired by Atlanta-based ZP Enterprises, resulting in investments in equipment and facility and a 20% employment increase. Felts and Miller each retain ownership interest and continue to serve as president and vice president of the company.

Felts and Miller both hold degrees in manufacturing engineering and industrial management from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. In addition, Felts holds a degree in drafting and design. Prior to forming Advanced Machining, both Felts and Miller served as Applications Engineers at ELOX Corp in Davidson, NC.

Advanced Machining capabilities include 5-axis CNC milling and turning, wire and sinker EDM, CAD/CAM, Zeiss CMM and grinding. The company is experienced with a variety of materials including all steel alloys, fully hardened steels, high nickel alloys, titanium, aluminum, ultra hard ceramic composites, non-ferrous alloys and polymers. Advanced Machining is AS9100C and ISO 9001:2008 certified.
