With EMPT0855, EMPT2445, EMPT_GRIND, EMPT_TURN and EMPT_FSW, FPT is offering interchangeable spindles on heads that are capable of interchanging between high-torque, high RPM grinding, turning and friction stir welding.
These spindles are designed to be hosted on the same head body. This feature removes the need to completely change the entire head. "The versatility of having a continuously contouring capability of the universal, bi-rotary head makes this a very compelling, cost-effective and quick-to-market solution to the machining industry at large," said a company spokesperson.
The universal head offers low pivot positions, and with the bearings at 50° positioned axially to the tool in all directions, makes the forces of cutting always equitable to the machining direction. This also helps ensure the dynamics of the head are entirely consistent with the tool force where the feeds and speeds can be programmed for the best case machining scenario. The above features along with the morphology of the universal head that is able to extend beyond the reaches of the machine travels offers the users an additional 2' of vertical machining within the same envelope.
The TUDX can be installed on all the FPT's vertical gantry machines (Dinox, Dinomax and Dinomek) and on its horizontal line of machines (Ronin, Castel Terus and Verus). The 50° head also provides an additional 10° undercut angle that is useful on vertical and horizontal solutions to machine some hard-to-reach surfaces that would otherwise need a separate set-up.
FPT developed the TUDX to address a specific void in the market where a flexible machining was required to machine a variety of materials, from Inconel to composites, on the same machine without expensive head changing capabilities. The market also required a reliable solution with easy access to replacement of spare spindles. With FPT designing, building and stocking its own electrospindles, it is able to address this specific challenge.
Besides milling, the same head can also host a grinding spindle to perform dedicated grinding functions and a dedicated turning head that disengages the milling drive internally to decouple the two operations. In addition, a completely different head for friction stir welding can be mounted. This opens up the flexibility where friction stir welding processes and machining can co-exist on the same platform.
