Custom Press Brake Tooling

Mate's Custom Press Brake Tool Components (left) when assembled (right) form aluminum, steel, stainless and other metals with 180° and larger bends. "This is a cam action tool," said Larry Boden, Mate's Press Brake Tooling Specialist. "When assembled, this Mate monolithic press brake tool is an example of Mate's custom press brake tooling capabilities for meeting a customer's most complex bending requirements."

Mate Precision Tooling now offers modified standard and custom Press Brake Tools (PBTs) that supplement its range of standard hardened and precision ground PBTs. These standard, modified and custom tool styles are available in American Precision Style, European Precision Style and Wila Trumpf Style.

Modified Mate PBTs

"While Mate's standard tools fulfill the needs for most fabricating operations, bending variations may require modifying the angle of a standard punch or die a few degrees," said a company spokesperson. "Sometime the angle of the standard punch or die needs to be modified. This is easily accomplished because the induction hardening depth is 3 mm to 4 mm (.118 in to .157 in). This allows material removal to modify an angle or change a radius without jeopardizing the structural integrity of the tool."

Other frequent tool modifications include cutting a window or relief pocket to provide clearance so that a formed part does not collide with the punch during the forming process. "Mate designs these modifications backed by extensive experience to ensure these modified PBT perform up to expectations," said the spokesperson.

Custom Mate PBTs

When a standard or modified standard Mate PBT is not the best solution, Mate's application specialists will design a custom tooling solution. Frequent custom requests include forming multiple bends in one stroke to decrease production costs by increasing formed parts per hour. A good example is a hinge curl tool that can form the curl in two or three strokes.

"Mate offers a variety of custom PBTs for virtually every special bending requirement. All Mate Press Brake Tools-Standard, Modified and Custom-are designed to satisfy bending application needs," said the spokesperson.
