T-Bed Horizontal Boring Mill

A new version of the Giddings & Lewis T-bed horizontal boring mill is now available with added capacity and capabilities. "This latest version produces value by providing the highest level of performance in productivity, accuracy and reliability," said Peter Beyer, Fives Giddings & Lewis' Sales and Applications Director.

The Performance T-bed is designed with heavier load capacity with 25 and 40 ton (lb.) tables. Plain and rotary tables, which range in size from 1,400 x 1,600 mm (55 x 63") to 2,000 x 2,500 (78.7 x 98.4"), are hydrostatic, adding stiffness for heavy precision cutting. The 360,000-position contouring table features a clamping system designed to increase rigidity for operations such as off-center machining. The dual table drive pinions and independent motors are tensioned against one another, producing zero backlash and compensating for lost motion and resulting in quality precision parts.

Faster traverse rates of 25 m/min (984 IPM), higher thrust, heavier tool capacity of 50 kg (110 lbs.) and extended travels are some of the developments that add to the productivity of the Giddings & Lewis T-bed. "It has industry-leading spindle travel with the ability to extend past table center, reaching deep inside parts and optimizing tooling selection," said a company spokesperson.

Efficiency and throughput are enhanced with optional pallet shuttles, automatic attachment changing and additional headstock choices. Higher horsepower and torque headstocks with 130 or 155 mm (5.1 or 6.1") spindles as well as the Giddings & Lewis Integrated Contouring Head (ICH) are available on the Giddings & Lewis Performance T-bed. "We are seeing an increase in activity from the oil patch, especially fracking. A Giddings & Lewis HBM with ICH is able to rough, finish and turn part features in a single set-up, making it well-suited for the production of fluid ends," Beyer stated.
