Northrop Grumman Awards Scholarships at STEM Event

Northrop Grumman Corporation recently hosted its 10th annual local science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) scholars event at its Charlottesville, VA, facility, recognizing local graduating seniors for their achievements and awarding scholarships in the High School Involvement Partnership (HIP) and Engineering Scholars programs.

Both programs were introduced by Northrop Grumman to Albemarle County in 2007 based on the concern that too few of the nation's students are interested in pursuing careers in STEM fields.

The Northrop Grumman HIP program gives high-achieving juniors and seniors the opportunity to participate in hands-on job training and earn high school credit, while the Engineering Scholars program is a merit-based scholarship program designed to recognize graduating seniors for their accomplishments. "To date, Northrop Grumman has mentored 28 HIP students from the Albemarle County/Charlottesville city area, and has pledged more than $780,000 in scholarship money for the HIP and Engineering Scholars programs," said a company spokesperson.

"The HIP program gives high-potential Albemarle County high school students the unique chance to work with employee mentors at Northrop Grumman while still in high school," said Jeff Holloway, Site Director for Northrop Grumman in Charlottesville and executive sponsor for the company's local HIP program. "By the time they begin college, these students already have a solid understanding of engineering applications, as well as hands-on experience after completing technology-related projects throughout the school year."

The event in Charlottesville was attended by parents, community leaders, representatives from the various high schools and the University of Virginia, as well as Northrop Grumman employees.
