Goodwin College mobile training unit arrives at Sirois Tool in Berlin.
Kyle Zachary of Goodwin College leads a training session to employees of Sirois Tool while on board the mobile training unit.
Sirois Tool, a manufacturer of tooling, fixtures and gauges, along with precision parts and assemblies, recently partnered with the Goodwin College Advanced Manufacturing Mobile Training Lab to offer advanced instruction to its employees. In two four-hour sessions at the company's Berlin, CT, headquarters, 10 Sirois team members learned about Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), a system for defining and communicating engineering tolerances.
"As technological advances accelerate change across the industries we serve, it is essential that we train our workforce to keep pace," said Alan Ortner, President of Sirois Tool. "Our engagement with Goodwin College allows us to continue to skillfully respond to our customers' demands for precision parts while also meeting our employees' desire to acquire new skills."
Using symbolic language on engineering drawings and computer-generated three-dimensional models, GD&T determines the accuracy required on each controlled feature of a precision part. The system has been used successfully for many years in the automotive, aerospace, electronic and commercial design and manufacturing industries.
Sirois employees received instruction in Goodwin College's 44-foot state-of-the-art learning lab. Founded in 1999, the college introduced its manufacturing program in 2012 to address Connecticut's shortage of skilled workers.
"We will continue to support Goodwin College in manufacturing education," Ortner said. "Sirois Tool is committed to bringing back what Connecticut does best - making things."
