The OptiSonic Series ultrasonic machining centers from OptiPro Systems are designed to help companies enhance productivity when machining optical glass or advanced ceramics including alumina, sapphire, silicon carbide, yttria, zirconia and more. OptiSonic Series machines are available in 3-axis, 4-axis or 5-axis configurations to handle a variety of applications. With the 3-axis version (X, Y and Z), the machine is capable of performing operations such as light-weighting, pocketing, core drilling, small hole manufacturing, rastering and deep drilling. Companies can choose to add a fourth or fifth axis of motion (B- and/or C-axis) to generate complex geometric features.
OptiSonic machines are driven by OptiPro's IntelliSonic software, the latest in ultrasonic technology. IntelliSonic performs a frequency sweep to determine the ideal oscillating frequency (between 15 and 30 kHz) based on the cutting tool being utilized. The software's clean graphical user interface makes it easy for the operator to perform this and other tasks during the initial set-up. Once the ideal frequency is determined and the cycle starts, IntelliSonic automatically adjusts the frequency based on changing machining conditions in order to maintain peak ultrasonic machining performance.
Because ultrasonic machining promotes free cutting of material, there is a significant reduction in force on the workpiece during machining, allowing operators to increase processing speeds and cutting feedrates. "As a result, faster cycle times are achieved compared to standard grinding/milling machines. This reduced force on the part also means less force on the tool, resulting in minimal tool wear and longer tool life. Reduced cycle times and increased tool life allows companies to enhance their bottom line by producing more parts with higher precision while needing to purchase less tooling," said Mike Bechtold, President of OptiPro.
The OptiSonic Series is available in four sizes: the 500 Series (500 mm X-axis travel), 800 Series (800 mm X-travel), 1100 Series (1,100 mm of X-travel) and bridge-style 1200 Series (1,200 mm of X-travel). Each platform is built with a heavy-duty cast iron Meehanite machine base to provide enhanced stability and vibration dampening. In addition, process consistency is provided through the use of liquid cooled, ceramic bearing high precision grinding spindles. HSK quick change toolholders are available in shrink fit and ER collet styles capable of holding a variety of tool shapes and sizes. Automatic tool changers (ATCs) with a 6-, 24- or 30-tool magazine are optional on the 500 Series, while a 24- or 30-tool ATC comes standard on the 800, 1100 and 1200 Series models.
As with all OptiPro machines, a full one-year warranty on parts and labor is included with a purchase, as well as two days of onsite training to make sure companies receive an optimal return on their investment.
