3-D Metal Printing Machine

Formalloy, LLC, an additive manufacturing company based out of San Diego, is offering its A222 3-D metal printing machine which leverages the latest in Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) technology, creating high-value metal parts, and has capabilities to repair, coat and modify existing parts.

"The key discriminator of Formalloy's LMD technology is the ability to use mixed metals and magnetics to print and clad, at a fraction of the cost of traditional and competitive manufacturing technologies," said a company spokesperson. The A222 utilizes open standards for powder supply, allowing users to provide their own powders or purchase non-proprietary powders for additional reduction in recurring costs.

Formalloy is participating in a Government Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The mission of the SBIR program is to support technical innovation by investing federal research funds in small businesses. The project will be completed under collaboration with the UC San Diego Department of NanoEngineering's Materials Research Center. Formalloy has provided the Center with part samples created on the Formalloy A222 Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) system for the purpose of performing microstructural analysis of advanced metallics produced by additive manufacturing. As part of the project, Formalloy will be providing a custom machine, based on the A222 design. Formalloy currently provides machines and services to a diverse set of customers including NASA, large tool manufacturers and research centers.
