Advanced Turning Capabilities for Multitask Machines
February 1, 2020
GibbsCAM 13 helps users create even the most complex processes associated with CNC machining. The software is designed to deliver a streamlined user experience, additional milling and turning capabilities and an enhanced G-code editor, which improves the communication between software and CNC machining centers. These improvements increase productivity while slashing machining time.
"GibbsCAM continues to build on its advanced multitask machining (MTM) and Swiss machining capabilities," said a company spokesperson. "It is the industry's only software offering elliptical turning, interpolated turning and eccentric turning allowing full functionality for CNC machines. For programming Swiss style machines, GibbsCAM is also the first in the industry to offer auto-bar chamfering in a standalone software solution."
Advanced capabilities include:
- Elliptical turning allows the user to turn parts on any machine that has accommodating axis for machining such as 4-axis mills, mill/turn and boring machines.
- Interpolation turning allows the user to cut a turning-style path by orienting a lathe insert towards a centerline while moving three linear and up to three rotary axes. Turning operations can now be performed on milling and boring machines as well as turning centers with orientable spindles.
- Eccentric turning facilitates turning operations for shapes not aligned with the center axis of a part (e.g., cutting of lobes on a crankshaft or camshaft) eliminating costly set-ups and fixturing.
- Auto-bar chamfer is offered for the first time in the industry in this release of GibbsCAM. This lets the user define automatic chamfering of stock to eliminate burrs, which is especially useful on Swiss-style machines.
- Broaching enables programming and simulation of linear and rotary broaches from the GibbsCAM interface. A full set of broaching tools are included, or a user can create custom broaches. Full broaching capabilities are available for milling and turning.
- 5-axis deburring to automatically program deburring operations by selecting geometry, surfaces or an entire model.
- Advanced approach and retract control for specification of tool movement before and after cutting moves. The user can select geometry to dictate tool movement, creating accurate and safe toolpaths when custom retracts are needed.
- Expanded face-milling capabilities allow the user to prepare stock efficiently for subsequent machining operations.
