Linking Education With Hands-On Training

(l-r) Biao Zhao, President, Shenyang Machine Tool Co., Ltd.; Dr. Lori Sundberg, President, Carl Sandburg College; Jerry McCarty, Chief Operating Officer, SMTCL-Americas; Elizabeth Purvis, Secretary of Education, Office of Governor Bruce Rauner; Ray Whitehead, CEO and Owner, Pegasus Machine Tool, Inc.

(l-r) Elizabeth Purvis, Secretary of Education, Office of Governor Bruce Rauner; Jerry McCarty, Chief Operating Officer, SMTCL-Americas; and Biao Zhao, President, Shenyang Machine Tool Co., Ltd. with SMTCL's i5M4 Vertical Machining Center featuring the i5 control. "The i5 control will provide accurate information directly into manufacturing production systems which otherwise have to be entered manually by machine operators," said Jerry McCarty. "The ability of the control to work in lights out operations will make SMTCL machines more productive and less costly.

SMTCL, Carl Sandburg College and Pegasus Machine Tool recently launched an integrated manufacturing partnership combining education with work experience on SMTCL CNC machinery to support the immediate needs of the manufacturing industry. Through this partnership, the Pegasus Machine Tool facility in Galesburg, IL, will provide students with access to hands-on training on boring mills, vertical machining centers and turning centers provided by SMTCL. Students will also have access to all of the training documentation that SMTCL provides to its customers.

"This program, the Governor and I both believe, is an investment in the future of our students, our workforce and our state and can serve as a model for schools across Illinois," said Elizabeth Purvis, Secretary of Education, Office of Governor Bruce Rauner. "We need to make sure that we are preparing our scholars for 21st century jobs that include fields like advanced manufacturing and this public/private partnership will create a strong demand for skilled workers and prepare students to reap the benefits of a career in today's advanced manufacturing world. It gives students hands-on work experience using world class new technology manufacturing equipment not found in other programs and helps students develop specific skills through industry recognized training that will make them competitive job applicants."
