Optomec, a supplier of production grade additive manufacturing (AM) systems for 3-D printed metals, has signed an agreement with Fryer Machine Systems, a producer of machine tools. As part of the agreement, Fryer will integrate Optomec LENS metal AM solution into its new LaserFab 3-D hybrid machining centers.
Optomec has packaged its metal 3-D printing solution into a modular LENS Print Engine for rapid integration with metalworking platforms such as CNC mills, lathes, robots, custom gantries or even laser cutting and welding systems. The modular LENS Print Engine components include Optomec proprietary SteadyFlow powder feeders, LENS processing head with interchangeable nozzles, fiber laser, PartPrep and 5-axis tool path generation software, and SmartAM closed loop process controls. Optomec's LENS family of 3-D metal printers have been used in industry for over 17 years to repair, rework and manufacture high-performance metal components and wear coatings in materials such as titanium, stainless steel, carbides and super alloys.
The Optomec LENS Print Engine will be integrated into Fryer's new LaserFab 3-D hybrid machining centers. Fryer's LaserFab series feature a high power fiber laser and a high performance VMC for high speed machining. Standard features include a 1.5 second 24 tool automatic tool changer (ATC), a 15,000 RPM inline spindle (30,000 RPM option), a high torque 30 HP motor and a 1,900 IPM rapid feedrate. Combined with roller type linear ways and heavy duty FEA designed castings, the LaserFab can print and finish machine parts to a 4 micron tolerance.
"For 35 years, Fryer Machine Systems has established itself as a leader in providing affordable, high performance machine tools to the metal working industry," said Dave Ramahi, President and CEO of Optomec. "Both Fryer and Optomec share a common vision that the key to the industrial adoption is to follow this same principle by providing manufacturers with high quality, affordable metal AM tools."
"Since our inception, we have based our business on the core principles of delivering quality products that are fairly priced and surrounding those products with exceptional service to our customers," said Larry Fryer, Founder and President of Fryer Machine Systems. "We are applying these same principles in partnership with Optomec to introduce hybrid CNC systems at new price thresholds that will accelerate industrial adoption of this technology."
