Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG offers the C 32 U, a high-performance 5-axis CNC machining center with modified gantry design. It can handle workpieces up to 1,000 kg.
The C 32 U features traverse paths of 650/650/500 mm (XYZ) adjusted to the maximum tool size. The machining center may be utilized for applications such as tool and mold manufacturing, medical technology, aviation and aerospace, machine and apparatus construction, engine and auto racing technology and the subcontractor industry.
The modified gantry is manufactured with mineral casting with enhanced vibration dampening properties and offers main axis support. The machine features tandem drive of the NC-swiveling rotary table, a quadruple roller guide system and centrally arranged main drive for the Y-axis. The swiveling angle of the A-axis is +/- 13° for a total of 260° . The space-saving ring-shaped tool magazine integrated into the basic body of the machine works according to the pick-up principle, changes tools quickly (4.5 seconds chip-to-chip time) and features space for 36 tools with SK40 or HSK A 63 holder. Additional magazines are optionally available with 43, 87 or 160 pockets. This makes it possible to machine complex workpieces, entire product families or a variety of individual parts without additional set-up processes.
Customers can choose between five main spindle drives with up to 29 kW of power, torques up to 200 Nm and speeds of 10,000, 18,000, 25,000 and 42,000 RPM. Customers can also select from three variants of tables:
- Rigid clamping table with a clamping surface of 900 x 665 mm and max. table load of 1,500 kg
- NC swiveling rotary table Ø 650 x 540 mm for table loads up to 1,000 kg
- NC swiveling rotary table Ø 320 mm for table loads up to 300 kg.
Both tables are available with torque drive or worm gear, depending on the specific application. The tandem drive in the A-axis (the table swiveling axis) and the torque drive in the C-axis (rotary axis) for NC swiveling rotary tables are intended to provide dynamic positioning, short non-productive times and reliable fixing in the selected machining position, according to the company.
"Other features of the C 32 U dynamic include the operating concept and the large working area," said a company spokesperson. "The easy accessibility to the working area and thus to clamping systems or workpieces ensures unrestricted handling and working conditions. The design of the working area 'without corners or edges' promotes ideal swarf ejection." A hinged belt conveyor or scraper belt conveyor is optionally available for swarf transport.
Either the Heidenhain iTNC 530 or the Siemens 840 D sl CNC system can be used on the control units. The control panel features a 19" screen that can be rotated up to 30° . Featuring a +/- 100 mm height adjustment range of the control panel and plug-in storage unit, the operating system can be individually adjusted for each user at any time without any need for extensive changeovers. Control units have integrated safety equipment according to category 3 of EN 954-1. The E-Messenger provides immediate information for the user. Should anything go wrong, remote diagnostics is available to provide fast help with programming or control problems.
A range of automation equipment such as pallet change systems, pallet storage systems, complete flexible manufacturing cells including workpiece storage and material flow or complete handling systems and robot solutions are also available with the C 32 U. Turnkey technology is available.
The C 32 U dynamic is structured as a "hook machine," has a three-point support, requires no foundation and can also be transported as a whole unit. The individual units are immediately accessible as soon as the doors are open. In case of a spindle crash, the plug can be disconnected and the replacement spindle quickly installed. Collision protection with collision inquiry has been retained, as has the compression sleeve. Therefore in case of a spindle crash, only the compression sleeve needs to be replaced (applies to 10,000 RPM, 15,000 RPM and 18,000 RPM spindles).
