Sullivan College of Technology and Design (SCTD) recently celebrated the grand opening of its new machine lab, making it the latest Haas Technical Educational Center (HTEC) operating in Kentucky. The new Advanced Manufacturing Technology wing of the college features two Haas CNC machine tools and was created by repurposing four smaller classrooms into one large, functional center.

To celebrate the new addition, HFO/Midwest partnered with SCTD to host a grand opening open house during the same week as SkillsUSA's National Leadership and Skills Conference, which was held at Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. Over 100 local manufacturers, educational instructors, students and parents attended the event where they were treated to live cutting demonstrations on Haas CNC machines, a tour of the college and an opportunity to network with local suppliers of tooling, accessories and software.

"We are excited to play such a significant role in SCTD's new Advanced Manufacturing Technology machine lab," said Dave Tucker, President of HFO/Midwest. "We recognize the pain point that many of our customers share in looking for skilled operators to run their Haas CNC machines and are happy to support programs like the one at SCTD, which will go a long way toward filling the skills gap in support of Kentucky's growth in manufacturing."

The new space at SCTD has an open floor plan allowing students to complete their hands-on labs, as well as two classrooms. Equipment in place within the lab includes a Haas TM-1P CNC toolroom mill with automatic tool changer, a Haas TL-2 CNC toolroom lathe, a knee mill, an engine lathe and several Haas CNC simulators.

"All of us at Sullivan College of Technology and Design are very excited to support local manufacturers," said Chris Ernst, Executive Director SCTD. "The support from our local Haas Factory Outlet, as well as the Haas Technical Education Center network, has enabled us to get up and running quicker than we could have on our own."

Toni Neary, Educational Director for the local Haas Factory Outlet, said, "The mission of the Haas Technical Education Center network is to promote and advance manufacturing and productivity through excellence in manufacturing education. Our vision is to collectively develop and disseminate the best educational materials and techniques available for advanced manufacturing education."
