SG-160 Sky-Grind dry grinding machine
Samputensili has recently launched a machine that can eliminate the need for cutting oils while grinding gears after heat treatment.
The SG 160 SKY GRIND features two spindles: one for skive hobbing and one for generating grinding.
"When grinding, most of the heat is transferred into the workpiece. Reducing friction, discharging the heat and evacuating the chips are the primary tasks for the oil-based lubricant," said a company spokesperson. "However, the equipment dedicated to the oil treatment absorbs 75% of the total energy consumed by a grinding machine, requires a massive amount of space and contributes to the cost of investment and maintenance of grinding machines."
"The SG 160 SKY GRIND removes 90% of the stock allowance with the first pass using a skive hobbing tool, which has the advantage of not heating the workpiece excessively," said Enrico Landi, Division Director of Samputensili Machine Tools. "With the second finishing pass a grinding wheel removes the remaining stock without overheating the workpiece, resulting in a dry process.
"Moreover, the machine's spindles, actuated by linear motors and the use of more channels, simultaneously ensure a chip-to-chip time of less than 2 seconds.
"The final result is faster than traditional dual table grinding machines, characterized by a small footprint and a low cost of investment for auxiliary equipment. More importantly, by eliminating the need for cutting oils, the machine is environmental friendly."
The SG 160 SKY GRIND helps ensure cycle times for the finishing of gears that are in line with the automotive industry.
