UNIST Coolubrictor
Coolant in many metalcutting applications is mainly utilized to remove heat from the cutting tool, thus extending tool life. To a lesser degree some coolants can reduce friction, which in turn can reduce heat encountered during the cutting process.
"By reducing friction, machinists can consequently reduce heat and thereby in many cases do not need coolant," said Al Zaitoon of Industrial Sales Group. "Coolant being inefficient in providing an effective lubrication barrier, uses the water component in the coolant mix to remove the heat generated by friction. Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) on the other hand, attacks the source of heat generation, which is friction."
Sawing, drilling, milling and tapping are some machining operations where an MQL approach can be utilized effectively and eliminate the need for coolant.
"MQL when applied and used with a good delivery system provides an extremely effective lubrication barrier between the cutting tool and the material machined without the need for coolant," said Zaitoon.
"UNIST has developed an MQL system that provides an effective lubricant and air mixture directed at the interface of the cutting tool and the workpiece," said Zaitoon. This layer of lubricant, which is a plant-based formula, is environmentally friendly and the shavings and chips produced are clean and dry.
