All-in-One Assembly

Comau has announced the SmartCubeComau manufacturing system featuring advanced technologies from robotics and integrated assembly solutions, in an efficient lean manufacturing solution.

"SmartCubeComau is a new assembly concept built to overcome the main weaknesses of present manufacturing systems, such as limited process integration, reduced flexibility, low scalability and manufacturing efficiency," said a company spokesperson.

"From manual to semi-automated or fully automated, and from serial to parallel cells, the SmartCubeComau product line offers a range of choices for injecting efficiency into production. SmartCubeComau can help reduce management and manufacturing costs at the same time that it ramps up production performance," continued the spokesperson.

SmartCubeComau is a fully standard solution that optimizes production flows in order to reduce working capital and streamline lead times. It can be standardized from manual to semi-automatic or automatic, robotized, serial and parallel cells. "This level of standardization is important, as companies can employ the same cost-effective assembly solution anywhere in the world, making spare parts management easier and less expensive. In fact, SmartCubeComau was created to help lower engineering and manufacturing costs while increasing overall quality and performance," said the spokesperson.

Another benefit is flexibility and scalability. Lines can be designed to process different types of parts and SmartCubeComau's components can be modified to support future changes in engine production. SmartRobComau, for example, can be retooled with minimal investment or easily refurbished to support a successive version of the same or similar engine or mechanics dock. SmartCubeComau is also completely scalable. "There is no need to disassemble the system when requirements change, and adaptation is easy, fast and inexpensive. This enables companies to quickly align production capabilities to meet changing market demands," said the spokesperson.

The SmartCubeComau concept encompasses three products that can independently integrate with existing production lines, or work in unison to provide a complete solution:

  • SmartManComau: A manual assembly station for any operation. With enhanced ergonomic design and a reduced footprint, SmartManComau is built for agility to respond to sudden changes in production or scale. "This manual assembly station comes in three sizes, features rapid retooling and can meet the demands of any assembly process," said the spokesperson.
  • SmartRobComau: SmartRobComau has two options in assembly stations: semi-automated or fully automated, depending on production needs. "The semi-automated options fuse human operator and machine processes into a single assembly station," said the spokesperson. The fully automated version offers the same space and energy savings as the manual and semi-automated options - 50% floor space reduction and 60% reduction in power and fluid consumption - while taking assembly processes to a nearly autonomous level.
  • SmartCellComau: A parallel assembly station that is built for to low-to-medium volume automated assembly of components that require tight tolerances. "SmartCellComau embodies a highly efficient blend of Comau technologies - from robotics, CNC and body welding to proven hard automation - to bring a robust solution that surpasses the demands of the global lean manufacturing landscape," said the spokesperson.
