Complete Machining for Demanding Manufacturing Tasks

Machining center C 22 MT (mill-turn)

With the C 22 MT, Maschinenfabrik Berthold HERMLE offers a mill-turn solution designed specifically for process integration. The machine is based on the C 22 platform but has been further developed for combined milling rotational machining, thereby meeting the growing demands for precision, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness in machining.

The focus of this development is on the full integration of several manufacturing technologies into a single machine. In addition to the conventional simultaneous 5axis milling process, the C 22 MT also enables turning operations and can be expanded to include grinding technologies and power skiving. This makes it possible, in particular, to efficiently rough-machine rotationally symmetrical component geometries in turning mode and then finish them to a high degree of precision without having to reclamp them.

This continuous process chain within a clamping set-up has a direct impact on component quality. By eliminating reclamping and reference errors, the achievable form and position tolerances increase, while at the same time process reliability is improved. This results in time savings, since set-up operations are reduced and machining strategies can be optimally combined.

"From an economic perspective, the C 22 MT is primarily designed to reduce unit costs," said a company spokesperson. "Combining several machining steps results in shorter throughput times and improved utilization of the resources employed. At the same time, the need for additional machine capacity and floor space is reduced, as process steps which were previously carried out separately on different machines are now combined within a single system. This high level of integration also supports sustainable manufacturing concepts by reducing energy and material consumption."

In terms of design, the C 22 MT is based on a further-developed swiveling rotary table from the SRT 320 MT series, which has been systematically engineered to meet the requirements of combined machining processes. In addition to a redesigned A-axis housing and an optimized C-axis bearing, the system features high-performance clamping technology and a water-cooled axis structure for thermal stabilization. These measures help ensure high rigidity and positioning accuracy, even under torsional loads.

In terms of performance, the machine covers a wide range of applications. Workpieces with a diameter of up to 320 mm can be machined; workpiece weights of up to 300 kg are permitted in milling mode and up to 150 kg in turning mode. The integrated motor spindle achieves speeds of up to 20,000 RPM, while the machining table speed in turning mode is up to 1,500 RPM, depending on the control. The available clamping torque of 400 Nm also allows for the machining of challenging materials and geometries.

A key feature of the C 22 MT is the seamless integration of clamping and automation solutions. The HERMLE pallet clamping system (PCS) is integrated directly into the machining table and requires no additional clamping plates. This reduces not only the overall height, but also improves the overall rigidity of the system. At the same time, the integrated clamping status monitoring system offers process reliability during automated operation.

The machine is also designed to accommodate a range of automation solutions. In addition to the HS flex handling system, robot systems such as the RS 05-2, the RS 1 or the RS 2 can be adapted in the future. This allows the system to be used flexibly in low-labor or fully automated production environments.

Particular attention was paid to safety features in mill-turn technology. The safety enclosure is therefore fitted with laminated safety panes and a specially designed cabin top to protect the operator in particular.

Due to the shape and volume of the chips produced, a specially designed hinged belt conveyor is used. In addition, an ICS system with integrated bed flushing helps ensure reliable chip removal and stable process conditions. Optimized accessibility and adapted safety enclosure designs also ensure good maintenance and service conditions.
