In metalworking, some components require more than a conventional milling machine or lathe can provide. Large housings, machine frames, gearbox casings, pump bodies, and other heavy-duty components often require complex machining operations, including drilling, boring, milling, and facing from multiple sides. The KNUTH BO 110 is engineered to handle these demanding applications, combining the capacity and versatility needed to machine large, heavy components accurately and efficiently, the company reported.
The BO 110 is a conventional horizontal boring and milling machine with a table load capacity of 5,512 lbs. Its 43.3" x 37.8" worktable can be positioned through four 90° positions, allowing the operator to machine several sides of a component without repeatedly removing and realigning it. This is particularly useful for components where the position of bores and machined surfaces must remain accurate in relation to one another.
The machine provides 35.4" of travel on the X, Y and Z axes. The 23.6" W-axis allows the spindle to extend into the workpiece for deeper boring operations, while the separate facing slide provides an additional 7.1" of travel. This gives the BO 110 the ability to perform drilling, boring, milling, facing, and thread-cutting operations on one machine.
Its 4.3" spindle uses an SK 50 tool mount and is driven by a 10 HP main motor. The spindle operates from 8 to 1,000 RPM and produces up to 903 ft-lbs. of torque, with a maximum axial feed force of 2,754 lbf. The low-speed range and high torque are important when machining larger bore diameters or removing material from heavy components. The machine also has a 2.0" drilling capacity.
The facing slide operates from 4 to 200 RPM and produces up to 1,446 ft-lbs. of torque, allowing larger internal and external facing operations to be completed without moving the workpiece to another machine.
Automatic feeds are available on the X, Y, Z, and W axes, while rapid traverse rates of up to 98.4 IPM reduce positioning time between machining operations. The X.Pos 3.2 3-axis position indicator provides accurate position feedback and includes functions such as hole-circle calculation, storage for up to 10 tools, radius and diameter selection, and metric or imperial measurement.
Accuracy is supported by rigid, hardened, and precision-ground square guideways. With a total machine weight of 25,353 lbs., the BO 110 provides a stable platform for machining heavy workpieces. The specified counter-boring accuracy is H7, with a surface finish of Ra 1.6 µm.
The machine also incorporates mechanical interlocks that prevent incompatible functions from operating simultaneously. Overload clutches protect the headstock and feed gears, while telescopic steel covers protect the guideways from chips and dirt. Central lubrication is included as standard.
Within the metalworking industry, the BO 110 is particularly suited to general engineering workshops, heavy-equipment repair, mining and industrial maintenance operations, and manufacturers producing large components in low or medium quantities. Its conventional operation also makes it practical for repair work and one-off components where the time and cost involved in preparing a CNC program may not be justified.
"The BO 110 combines the functions of a boring mill, drilling machine and milling machine on one heavy-duty platform," said a company spokesperson. "Its key advantage is the ability to machine large components from multiple sides while reducing the number of set-ups and separate machines required to complete the work. For applications involving large, heavy or complex components, this can translate into greater flexibility, reduced handling, and a more efficient machining process."
