CBN Profile Grinding Disc for Internal Gears

Liebherr offers single-, double- and triple-ribbed CBN profile grinding discs. These discs can be used with new grinding head generations IG, OPAL 4.0 and 4.1 for internal grinding.

Together with diamond, cubic boron nitride (CBN) is one of the super hard grinding materials. "Both materials offer major enhancements to conventional grinding materials, including corundum and silicon carbide, in terms of hardness," said Janus Siegfried, Head of Tool Production and Technology in Liebherr's Ettlingen, Germany, plant. "There is no need for time-consuming dressing when grinding with electroplated CBN profile grinding discs; the discs also have a longer tool life. We also provide individual grain sizes for various applications. Our customers can select the appropriate grinding material for each application.

"These tools can be manufactured with very small diameters," Siegfried continued. "In contrast, corundum tools reach their geometric process limit much quicker."

With double- or triple-ribbed grinding discs, roughing and finishing can be completed in one process since the individual ribs have different grain sizes. "As a result, grinding time can be significantly reduced while the high surface quality required can still be achieved," said a company spokesperson.

The first users of this technology were from the aerospace industry and had high quality requirements. "We also see huge opportunities for this technology in the automotive sector and for some industrial gear unit applications," Siegfried said. "The market calls for the use of low-noise planetary gear trains, particularly in combination with electric motors. High quality internal gearing is also decisive for these planetary gear trains. Liebherr's internal grinding technology can prove beneficial in meeting these requirements."
