Tilting Rotary Table Enables 5-Axis Machining

Calmotion LLC has released a 7" tilting rotary table for 5-axis machining. The TR-7 used in conjunction with a conventional 3-axis vertical machining center provides 5-axis machining of complex-shaped workpieces and reduces workpiece set-up time increasing machine productivity.

The TR-7 features dual thrust bearing support on the main spindle designed to increase rigidity and maximize the amount of axial and radial forces that can be absorbed. The two thrust bearings are installed under tension to ensure that the gear does not drift due to thermal expansion and to eliminate accuracy errors introduced under varying temperatures. The TR-7 incorporates Timken tapered roller bearings to provide rigidity and accuracy.

"The gear torque efficiency is increased by reducing friction with the combined use of an alloy steel worm and an aluminum bronze gear. The bronze material fills the alloy steel pores of the worm during break-in and allows the gear set to be set up tighter than with other materials. Tight contact between the worm and gear minimizes backlash and the use of dissimilar metals eliminates the threat of galling," said a company spokesperson.

The braking mechanism is designed with a 360 degree clamping brake. Clamping the entire circumference provides maximum clamping rigidity for heavy cutting applications. The TR-7 used an air brake as standard with an air driven hydraulic brake option available for extreme cutting use. The rotary table achieves a positioning accuracy of +/- 30 arc seconds on the tilting axis and +/- 15 arc seconds on the rotary axis.

The TR-7 can be outfitted with servo motors to be compatible with most major CNC providers. A 5-axis simultaneous CNC is required for full 5-axis control. A stand alone USB indexer from Calmotion can be used for indexing applications with the use of M codes. Alternatively, the USB indexer can be used to position the 5th axis (4 + 1 control) for machines that are limited to 4-axis simultaneous motion. The TR-7 is 100% made in the USA.
