Merrimack Valley manufacturer United Tool & Machine Corporation (UTM) recently received a $300,000 grant through the Massachusetts Manufacturing Accelerator Program (MMAP), a state initiative designed to help manufacturers invest in growth, modernization, and long-term competitiveness.
Administered by the Center for Advanced Manufacturing, the newly updated MMAP awarded $4.8 million to 20 small- and medium-sized manufacturers across Massachusetts. The program supports projects that strengthen manufacturing operations, increase productivity, and position companies for future growth.
UTM will use the funding to purchase an HMC with a pallet system, a strategic investment that will increase productivity, improve efficiency, and expand manufacturing capacity.
The timing lines up with another milestone for the company: UTM will open its Lawrence facility to the public on October 2, 2026, as part of Manufacturing Day, a national event held annually on the first Friday in October to introduce students, parents, educators, and community members to modern manufacturing careers. Visitors to UTM's event will get a firsthand look at the company's CNC machining, wire EDM, laser and waterjet cutting, metal stamping, die cutting, and assembly operations, including the growth driven by investments like the new MMAP-funded equipment.
Founded in 1947, United Tool & Machine has provided precision machining services in the Merrimack Valley for over 75 years. With more than 3.8 million high-skill manufacturing jobs expected to open nationwide over the next decade, UTM sees events like Manufacturing Day as a chance to show the next generation what a modern manufacturing career looks like.
