Brush-On Gel Formulations

Designed for use on any size parts, the new Presto Black Gel, Antique Brown Gel and Antique Black Gel formulations solve the application challenges of liquid products while producing a high quality, durable darkened finish.

Presto Black Gel is suitable for most non-stainless iron and steel surfaces. Without runs or drips, any size surface in vertical or horizontal position can be converted to a durable black finish. Simple and safe to use, Presto Black Gel is applied at room temperature. Similarly, the Antique Brown and Antique Black Gels are designed for use on brass, bronze and copper substrates to produce attractive, durable brown/black finishes on these metals.

The gel finishes are a suitable solution when you can not or do not want to dip the entire part into a liquid bath container. They are great for sheet metal that needs only partial finishing, for touching up parts and for adding a darkened finish to machined or ground sections of a part.

The gel chemical reaction takes only 2 to 10 minutes following surface cleaning to remove oil, oxides and welding flux. Color tone and depth is easily controlled by visual inspection and stopping the process by rinsing off with a wet sponge and sealing the finished surface.

Another feature is that the gel finishes can be highlighted or abraded to achieve a distressed look. A final step to protect the finish and enhance the appearance is to add a clear topcoat such as a satin-gloss urethane lacquer or paste wax.

"These gel finishes are user proven by furniture manufacturers, building contractors, metal manufacturers and do-it-yourselfers on a variety of projects," said a company spokesperson. Additional applications include building metal furniture tubing, fascia, elevator cabs, staircase railings and handrails, sculpture, monuments and window hardware.

All of Birchwood Technologies gel products are available in one gallon and five gallon containers ready for application.
