Okuma's App Store is a centralized online marketplace for CNC machine tool apps and related content. "Okuma's open architecture control and Windows are fully integrated, allowing for true customization to suit particular machining needs," said a company spokesperson. "Applications developed for Okuma machines and controls increase productivity and improve communications by streamlining and simplifying machine tool processes."Apps make life easier and more productive, and the same can be said for machining. They can be customized by the user or any third-party developer (e.g., machine tool accessory providers, operators, programmers or IT specialists)."
The Okuma App Store currently has more than 29 apps available for assorted functionalities ranging from CAD/CAM software, measurement and gauging to security and tooling. "A few productivity-enhancing benefits to look for in apps are reduced scrapped parts and downtime, increased productivity, improved part quality and ease of use," said the spokesperson.
The following are some favorites from Okuma's App Store, according to the spokesperson:
- Machine Alert: allows users to set up machine alarm notifications; alarms are sent by email or text to mobile phones to ensure that machines are running and chips are being made without interruption
- Caron Engineering (CEI) Okuma Barcode: writes scanned numeric data to a user selected CommonVariable as defined by the application configuration
- Gosiger View Control: allows the administrator to limit operator access to certain screens without the use of "edit lock" key
- Sandvik Drilling & Tapping Calculator: includes machining calculations, cost calculations, hole size for tapping, drill selection for reaming and ISO bore/shaft tolerances
- MTConnect: sends data to connected MTConnect agents when data are changed; an agent will output these data in MTConnect-compliant XML format that can be consumed by MTConnect client applications.
"Using apps on a control is one of the simplest, fastest ways to make significant productivity gains quickly," said the spokesperson. "The System Compatibility Output Utility (SCOUT) app helps take the guesswork out of which app will work for your control. SCOUT provides a detailed report of a system's configuration and a list of all available apps and their compatibility status for a machine."
