Five Types of Steady Rests

Typically, steady rests are called for when the inherent strength of a work piece isn't sufficient to resist the force of the cutting tool, or to support the end of a work piece without engaging a tailstock on a lathe.

LNS America offers four models of steady rest-based automatic workholding systems plus manual units that, together, cover any application. Each model can be custom-designed for the user's specific requirements, and include all necessary components including the appropriate steady rest system, custom brackets, automatic clamp bases, valve packages, hose track assemblies as needed and electrical connection to the machine tool interface.

The five LNS models:

  • SLU standard steady rests are multi-purpose, available with manual or automatic lubrication, and include side cylinder models for tight clearances. Newest model SLU-X has a sealed body and a proximity switch for end position open.
  • SR premium steady rests have a fully sealed body and hardened arms for greater durability. They also provide through-coolant ports on all three arms.
  • K steady rests have a compact design that allows large part clamping in smaller machine envelopes and provide coolant delivery through the outer arms.
  • KLU steady rests have narrow arms for use in grooves or short clamping diameters, and provide coolant delivery through the outer arms.
  • Manual steady rests can be custom designed to maximum capacity.
