Process Monitoring and Control System for Machine Tools

Genior Modular, a process monitoring and control system from Artis Systems, is designed to increase the process safety of machine tools automatically and without complex and tedious setting, according to the company.

"Undetected problems in machining processes can generate significant costs in mechanical production," said an Artis Systems engineer. "For example, undiscovered damage or increased wear on tools can easily lead to serious faults. At the same time, the competitive situation puts pressure on manufacturers to constantly increase the productivity and availability of their plants. The large number of complex monitoring processes can be mastered only with an easily operable monitoring system."

The Genior Modular system consists of a main module for connection with the machine control's PROFIBUS system for monitoring the machine's spindle and feed drives, and a universal measuring transducer for use with various ARTIS sensors for measuring conditions such as force-strain, acoustic emission and vibration, and acceleration. According to the company, Genior Modular is simple to install and commission due to the system's compact modules. It requires little adjustment to existing NC programs, and no special training for operators is required.

A main item of the latest Genior Modular system is the signal visualization that can be used selectively. "With this system, experienced machine operators can detect process anomalies in the early stages and take appropriate countermeasures," said an Artis Systems spokesperson. "One of the prime goals in the development of the visualization software was to find a solution as low cost as possible for the customer. As a result, the high-quality operator panels already present on the machines were used in place of expensive external displays. ARTIS offers a direct and fully integrated visualization solution - that is, without additional hardware such as PCs or displays - on the latest CNCs such as the Sinumerik 840D sl (PCU and TCU). Alternative machine controls, such as FANUC, are also being supported."

Artis GmbH, a part of the Marposs Group, is a provider of tool, process and machine condition monitoring and adaptive controls for metalcutting processes.
