GEN TURN CS Machines Now Available with Mitsubishi Controls

"The GEN TURN 32CS started the revolution in affordable 7-axis turning efficiency over 20 years ago, followed by the GEN TURN 36CS that has also been very successful in machine shops all over the world," said an Expand Machinery spokesperson. "The evolution of this machine series has reached a pinnacle with Expand Machinery's addition of the new GEN TURN 52CS Y2. This 2-in. bar capacity 8-axis mill/turn center delivers even more machining capability to boost production and increase your shop's capabilities-and most importantly, profitability."

According to the company, features and benefits of the GEN TURN 52CS Y2:

  • Fast chip-to-chip time for more precision finished parts per hour
  • 34 tool positions-more than a twin-spindle dual-turret lathe
  • 18 driven tool positions, 14 driven tools included in basic machine
  • Full C-axis and Y-axis for main and sub spindles
  • Faster and more productive than a twin-spindle dual-turret lathe
  • A completed part in just one operation.

The GEN TURN 52CS Y2 is an 8-axis 2" (51 mm) bar diameter sliding headstock CNC lathe. "While it is a Swiss-style machine with regard to the tooling layout, it does not use a guide bushing, so there is no requirement to use expensive ground barstock, and the small wasted bar remnant is shorter than that of a true Swiss machine," noted the spokesperson. "The strength of the machine and the 1,181 IPM rapid rates make the GEN TURN 52CS Y2 a highly competitive proposition it the field of one-operation unattended machining of complex workpieces in challenging materials."

All 8 axes are proficiently positioned using the new advanced Mitsubishi M80V CNC control to help ensure workpiece accuracy and machining efficiency. This fast control uses a 64-Bit CNC CPU with an efficient RISC processor with 223,600 block-per-minute processing speed and 2,236 block look-ahead and features 64 GB for program memory.

The GEN TURN 52CS Y2 lathe features a total of 34 tool stations. The main spindle has 21 tool stations. There are six live cross tools, four live axial tools, six turning tool stations and five ID tool stations, all in a gang configuration for machining on front side of the workpiece. Additional tooling capacity can be added by double-tooling ID tool stations with dual insert boring bar holders that will allow rough and finish boring, boring and turning, or boring and threading, all with just one tool position; and all without requiring a spindle reversal to reduce cycle time. The subspindle has 13 tool stations, including four driven stations with four live toolholders included. An additional four driven tools can be inserted into the subspindle tool block as needed. The five 25 mm ID tool stations on the backside of the main tool bridge are shared with the main spindle.

The main and sub spindle both have a high-performance C-axis with full contouring and 360,000 radial positions (0.001° resolution). C-axis operations facilitate engraving and milling to complete the highly complex part details needed to achieve a completed workpiece in just one machining operation.

Main spindle tooling-21 total main spindle tool positions with 10 live tools:

  • Six turning tools-5" x 5/8" x 5/8" (16 mm), +1 x 3/4" x 3/4" (20 mm)
  • Five end working static drill/bore/tapping tools-Using 1/2" ER-20 collet chucks or 25 mm bushings
  • Six overhead radial cross-working driven tool spindles with ER-20 collet chucks
  • Four axial driven tool spindles with ER-20 collet chucks.

Sub-spindle tooling-13 total back-working tool positions with four live tools:

  • Five static end-working 25 mm bores for drill/bore/tap tools using backside of main tool bridge
  • Four ER-20 axial driven tool spindles with ER-20 collet chucks fitted in sub spindle tool block
  • Four static end-working tools for drill/bore /tap tools using sub-spindle tool block
  • Note: Four additional axial driven tools can be placed in the sub spindle tool block in lieu of static tools.
  • Total: 34 tool positions with 14-driven tools included.

All live tools are gear driven and supported by oversized o42 mm bearings. There are six ER-20 cross slide live tools driven by a 2.0 HP motor and three ER-20 front slide live tools driven by a 1.0 HP motor.
