OptoSurf GmbH Becomes Part of Mahr Group

Mahr Inc. has announced the acquisition of OptoSurf GmbH, enabling Mahr to expand its optical surface metrology portfolio and enhance the assessment of tribological properties. This acquisition will allow Mahr to offer more advanced options to its customers, improving the ability to measure surfaces accurately and efficiently while supporting the minimization of friction, reduction of wear and improvement of system efficiency.

The scattered light technology initially developed by OptoSurf offers advantages, especially for finely machined surfaces with high functional requirements. "It can detect roughness down to the nanometer range, deriving surface parameters from the distribution of micro-profile angles within the measuring spots rather than from a height profile as with conventional tactile or optical methods," said a spokesperson.

The rougher the surface, the greater the angle distribution and the wider the scattering of the reflected light. This angular information is closely related to the friction behavior of surfaces in tribological systems.

The technology's high vibration and distance insensitivity make it suitable for direct use in the production environment, and its high-speed measurement capability allows for the evaluation of up to 100% of surfaces. Due to the high accuracy of the sensor system, this technology is suited for finely machined surfaces with high functional requirements, especially for applications in electromobility, mechanical engineering, aerospace technology, medical technology and semiconductor technology.

"Scattered light technology is an ideal addition to Mahr's existing systems," said Manuel Hüsken, CEO of the Mahr Group. "Our customers will benefit significantly, gaining higher productivity and expanded functionalities and application possibilities in surface analysis."
