High Power Modular Industrial Laser Power Sensor

MKS Instruments, Inc. offers the Ophir IPM-10KW, a high power modular laser power sensor designed to provide high accuracy and repeatable measurements in rough production environments.

The IPM-10KW sensor measures powers from 100 W to 11 kW for wavelengths from 900 nm to 1100 nm and 10.6 µm. The sensor is designed for manufacturers of laser-based machines for cutting and welding, as well as users who produce parts using these machines. The sensor's modular format allows users to mix and match components based on application needs. An optional automated shutter with a field replaceable window protects the sensor against dust and debris. Optional communication modules provide Profinet or EtherNet/IP connectivity.

"Automotive manufacturers and others working in heavy industries are increasingly concerned about the problems that arise if they produce faulty parts: loss of material, loss of time, loss of reputation, loss of money and legal ramifications," said Reuven Silverman, General Manager, Ophir Photonics. "The Ophir IPM-10KW is a versatile and robust high power laser measurement tool that easily integrates with modern automation systems. It provides real time visibility into the process, helping to eliminate bad products due to inappropriate laser power. The sensor's ability to measure smaller beams means the sensor can be installed closer to the focal point, ensuring more accurate readings."

The IPM-10KW industrial laser power sensor is a modular system that includes four easy-to-clean and simple-to-maintain components:

  • IPM-10KW power sensor with ISO17025 NIST and PTB traceability
  • IPM-Shutter10 automated shutter, field replaceable anti-reflective protective window and scatter shield (IP62-rated)
  • IPM-COM/Profinet communications module
  • IPM-COM/EtherNet/IP communications module.

The IPM-10KW sensor easily integrates into factory automation systems. Profinet and EtherNet/IP communication modules include two communication ports for daisy chain or ring networks, as well as two power connectors for power chaining. Measurements provide real time visibility into the process and alarm triggering for corrective actions, enabling predictive maintenance.

As a water-cooled system, the IPM-10KW sensor includes an interface for an external water flow meter. A built-in interlock system manages shutdown of the laser if the sensor overheats. Reference design for customized optical fiber adaptors are available on request. The IPM-10KW is lighter weight than current industry options and can be installed horizontally, vertically or upside down, the company reported.
