Expanded Depth Camera Portfolio

FRAMOS has added the Intel RealSense's D455, its fourth depth camera in the D400 series, to its 3D devices portfolio.

The D455 has a longer baseline, at 95 mm, which improves the depth accuracy while reducing depth errors to less than 2% at 4 m. Stereo depth images are further enhanced by a global shutter RGB sensor used to improve correspondence between depth and color images. The color imager utilizes a matching 86° x 57° field of view (FOV), the same seen by the depth sensors.

Included in the camera is a Bosch BMI055 Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to improve environmental awareness for robotics and drones. The Active IR Stereo depth data output resolution is 1,280 x 720 running up to 90 FPS while the color sensor, with its similar resolution, runs at 30 FPS. Distances can be measured up to 20 m but it works best in the range of 0.4 m to 6 m. Power and communication is done through one USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 cable for easy set-up. The camera is equipped with a 1/4"-20 thread compatible with standard camera tripods and two M4 thread mounting points for more secure installations.

As with all Intel RealSense cameras, the D455 runs with the cross-platform Intel RealSense SDK 2.0 and the included viewer application, all of which support Windows, Linux, Android and macOS. This latest version supports on-chip self-calibration to update the default settings, which takes less than 15 seconds and without the need for additional specialized targets.

Suitable applications for this camera include:

  • Collision avoidance: Longer range and high FOV offered by the camera enable earlier detection of potential hazards.
  • 3D scanning: Tightly integrated RGB and depth streams provide better quality scanning.
  • Digital signage: Longer range of depth data enable better interactions with larger touch free displays.
  • Robotics and AGV: Increased depth accuracy improves the accuracy of pick & place applications or navigation.
