6-Axis Mill/Turn Lathe

The GEN TURN 78 MSY, from Expand Machinery in Chatsworth, CA, is a 6-axis mill turn lathe with a powerful full-sized counter spindle and features a 7.5 HP milling spindle.

This 78 mm (3.07") bar capacity CNC lathe features a 16-station tool turret with fast 0.15-second bi-directional indexing. BMT-65 tooling is utilized for greater cutting rigidity and alignment characteristics. Internal and external tooling can be mixed on any tooling station for greater set-up flexibility. The tool count can be easily increased using toolholders that mount tools on both the front and backside, as well as by using gang-style tooling to take advantage of the Y-axis shift. The parts catcher utilizes a pick-off arm with twin-gripper fingers that gently places parts on the outbound parts conveyor belt for mark-free production, even on sensitive parts.

"Dual-wound motors with built-in spindles provide the maximum cutting torque without suffering the parasitic losses that belt-driven spindles create," said a company spokesperson. "This design provides for a high rate of spindle acceleration and deacceleration to reduce cycle times."

The main spindle has a 30-HP motor, and the counter spindle has a 15-HP motor. A spindle refrigeration unit is provided to control spindle heat build-up for enhanced part accuracy. Both hydraulic actuation cylinders feature stroke-control position monitoring to ensure that there is always a safe grip on the workpiece. The counter spindle has coolant forced through the spindle and spindle air blast to clean the collet or chuck jaws to enable a secure and accurate grip on the next workpiece. Both 8" and 10" chucks can be used for chuck work.

The dual opposed main and counter spindles are fully synchronized, and both feature a high-performance C-axis as standard on the main and the counter spindle and feature 360,000 radial positions as well as full contouring capability. Even 4-axis simultaneous contouring on both spindles can be achieved. The radial spindle position is accurately secured during cutting by a hydraulic disk brake.

The Mitsubishi M80 high-performance CNC control makes good use of the efficient RISC processer providing speed of 135,000 block-per-minute program processing speed with a 1,356-block look-ahead rate so complex features can be machined accurately and efficiently. A 64-GB memory is standard.

Expand Machinery also offers 32 mm, 42 mm and 52 mm Swiss CNC lathes and other multitasking CNC lathes, vertical milling centers and mill-drill-tapping centers as well as a complete line of Ganesh manual and CNC toolroom lathes and milling machines.
