Automatic Lathes Now Equipped with FANUC CNC Control

More than 2,500 INDEX ABC automatic lathes have offered precision machining capability in many shops worldwide. "The speed and precision of the INDEX ABC have set standards that remain benchmarks today," said a company spokesperson.

This production turning machine is designed to manufacture simple to moderately complex parts with rapid spindle acceleration and very quick chip-to-chip times. "It is ideal for runs from 5,000 to 50,000 parts in the 42-60 mm range," said the spokesperson. "The machine's combination of features supports a very low production cost per piece, even for complex parts."

FANUC CNC Control

Enhancing the ABC's precision turning is the availability of FANUC 31iB CNC control. According to the company, users can now enjoy INDEX productivity and precision with FANUC ease of use.

"Short cycle times are achievable due to simultaneous machining with up to three tools," said the spokesperson. The ABC is equipped with up to five driven back-working tools and offers driven tools in all turret positions. The machine is available in 2-, 3-, or 4-axis versions. The motorized 27-HP, 6,000-RPM spindle can generate up to 95 Nm of torque.

"Within the easy-access work area, mounted above the main spindle is the upper turret used mainly for I.D. work," said the spokesperson. "The lower turret is typically for O.D. work. A synchronized spindle operates in the upper turret."

The ABC is built to handle heavy-duty polygon turning and thread milling with a counterspindle or drive attachment. "The ABC can also be supplied with a quiet-running INDEX bar loader, which can save 4-30 seconds per cycle, and automatic part unloader automation," said the spokesperson.
