HSC Linear Series with CELOS

HSC 30 linear - Thermo-symmetrical machine bed in gantry design with linear drives on all axes

Innovative cooling concept for highest long-term accuracy of under 5 um and surface qualities less than Ra 0.15 um

HSC spindles with shaft, flange and sleeve cooling for speeds up to 28,000 RPM or 40,000 RPM are available as options

The new HSC linear series with CELOS from DMG MORI in the new common design

"In the field of high-speed machining, DMG MORI is setting new standards in precision and surface quality in tool and mold making with the HSC 30 linear and the HSC 70 linear," said a DMG MORI spokesperson. "Features include the unique long-term accuracy of less than 5 um made possible by the innovative cooling concept and thermo-symmetrical construction plus surface qualities of Ra < 0.15 achieved due to HSC spindles with shaft, flange and sleeve cooling. The advantages of linear drives in all axes also ensure highest dynamics up to 80 m/min rapid traverse with 60 months warranty. The advantages of the new DMG MORI design and the options of CELOS, round off the unique overall picture of these high-speed innovations."

The basis of both machines is a thermo-symmetrical machine bed for long-term accuracy. This is enhanced by an innovative cooling concept. Coolant flows through the machine bed and gantry, which ensures a stable temperature. In addition to the primary and secondary parts of the linear drives, the linear guideways are also cooled. This effectively dissipates the frictional heat generated and prevents a transfer of heat to the frame. Additional coolant channels on the headstock ensure an even temperature distribution here.

The spindles are the very heart of the HSC series. The 28,000 RPM and 40,000 RPM spindles are provided with shaft, flange and sleeve cooling. This results in thermally stable process conditions and up to 70% lower axial tool expansion. The outcome of this is better surfaces finishes of less than Ra 0.15. In addition, warm-up times and cooling down times are shortened by a factor of 5. This advantage takes effect for every tool changeover during precision machining, especially when exchanging a cold measuring probe. In-process measurements are therefore stabilized in the shortest possible time.

The HSC 30 linear has a spindle speed of 40,000 RPM with HSK E40 interface as standard. The standard version of the HSC 70 linear has an 18,000 RPM spindle. Speeds of 28,000 RPM and 40,000 RPM with the above mentioned shaft, flange and sleeve cooling are available as an option. As regards tooling, a 30-pocket tool magazine is part of the standard equipment. Versions for 60 or 120 tools are also available as options.

Both machines offer excellent accessibility to the work area, which is additionally improved in the HSC 70 linear by a recess in the machine bed. The compact HSC 30 linear requires only 4.5 m2 of floor space, with travels of 320 x 300 x 280 mm. The HSC 70 linear only requires a footprint of 6.3 m2 with a working volume of 650 x 600 x 380 mm.

Due to the tool delivery, on the one hand, the design of the integrated HSC linear series 5-axis solutions enable the tool length to be reduced and better surfaces finishes to be achieved. 5-axis machining on the HSC 30 linear is achieved by means of a swiveling rotary table. On the other hand, with the HSC 70 linear, this is achieved by a rotary NC table in conjunction with a swiveling spindle head. For the HSC 30 linear, the workpiece weights are 200 kg, or 80 kg on the swiveling rotary table. For the HSC 70 linear they are 700 kg on the fixed table, or 500 kg for the 5-axis version. The new HSC linear series can also be automated.

The new HSC series has been specially developed for tool and mold making and for the production of mold inserts or dies with the highest demands on surface quality. However, bone plates or implants for medical engineering and precision components in the automotive or aerospace industry are also accurately produced with the HSC 30 linear and HSC 70 linear in the shortest possible time, according to DMG MORI.

"In the new DMG MORI design, the new HSC machines now provide more functionality, user friendliness and ability to hold their value," said a DMG MORI spokesperson. "Large safety glass windows ensure maximum visibility into the work area and thus provide better monitoring of the manufacturing process. In addition, the windows can be removed from the outside, which facilitates servicing. Moreover, the finely textured long-life surfaces in the working area are a new feature. The surfaces provide a higher scratch resistance and better protection against damage. The new DMG MORI design is available in black or white for individuality at no additional cost.

A further highlight of the new DMG MORI design is the ERGOline with 21.5" multi-touch screen and infinitely adjustable display and control panel for convenient operation. The SMARTkey is also new for customized operator authorization. This ensures individual access rights to the control system.

"In conjunction with CELOS from DMG MORI, the HSC machines satisfy all the requirements for realizing a paperless manufacturing environment and interaction in inter-company production networks as part of a forward-looking Industry 4.0 strategy. The new HSC machines with CELOS and SIEMENS will be available from the second quarter of 2014. The machines will also be provided with HEIDENHAIN TNC 640 or Operate 4.5 on SIEMENS 840D solutionline."
