EDM Technology Advancements

GF Machining Solutions' AgieCharmilles CUT 2000 X wire EDM incorporates several advancements designed to enhance productivity, accuracy and cost efficiency. Developments in the core machine design and machine calibration and testing systems are engineered to streamline set-up and allow accurate and thermally stable machine performance for today's complex, high-precision workpieces.

The machine is especially well-suited to the production of parts with extreme geometries, such as thinner walls, recessed and intermittent cuts, sharp corners and non-round cavities and openings. Common parts produced with the AgieCharmilles CUT 2000 X include stamping tools and multi-cavity molds for electronics, information and communications applications as well as micro-scale components for medical applications and watchmaking.

High-precision guides and glass scales facilitate precise positioning capabilities that let the AgieCharmilles CUT 2000 X wire EDM hold tight part tolerances for enhanced quality and surface finish. According to the company, this eliminates pitch and positioning errors that would otherwise result in scrapped parts and increased production costs. It also enables shops to achieve ±0.00006" pitch accuracy over 13.385" x 9.050" and the same for M-shape form accuracy at a maximum metal removal rate of 16.535" sq./min.

The AgieCharmilles CUT 2000 X also features automatic wire-changing capabilities made possible through a patented universal three-point wire guide configuration. It allows the same wire guide to be used for wire diameters that range from 0.004" to 0.013" and handles up to 30° tapers. Plus, the guides' rotatable V-prisms can extend their working lives for thousands of hours.

Due to automatic wire-changing capability, the machine can perform both rough and finish burns using a different wire for each operation, all in a single machine set-up. Transition from one wire to the next is completely automatic, even between wires made with different materials and with different diameter sizes. Strategic use of optimal wire types can result in the potential reduction of wire costs and improve cycle times and accuracy by eliminating the need to set up and align the machine between roughing and finishing operations.

The AgieCharmilles CUT 2000 X includes Advanced 3D Setup functionality that further contributes to quick and easy machine set-ups. The set-up system conducts a variety of measurement cycles, including stepped parts and measurements outside the wire path to precisely locate workpieces.

The machine also includes an Integrated Vision Unit (IVU), which performs a complete scan of the part contour with a charge coupled device (CCD) camera to measure each cavity, compare measurements to the part's DXF CAD file and transmit the accuracy results in real time. The measurement can be done before the end of the machining cycle or as a final quality control step. If an irregularity is detected, the IVU makes corrections to ensure part reliability within 0.0001" of required dimensions.
