Vertical Turning of Large Workpieces

CTV 315 linear offers vertical turning of large workpieces up to 300 mm diameter and 25 kg weight.

A large work area handles workpieces up to Ø300 mm diameter and an optional function plate allows for additional tools.

Automation technology, like the prismatic frame conveyor belt shown here, is an available option for the new CTV 315 linear.

At EMO in Hanover, DMG MORI presented the 2nd generation of the CTV series by GILDEMEISTER, the CTV 315 linear. Featuring a production-optimized STEALTH design and integrated 15" SLIMline panel, it is designed to provide optimum accessibility of the work area and sufficient space for different automation tasks within a small footprint.

The CTV 315 linear enables machining of components up to Ø300 mm, 210 mm height and 25 kg weight. In order to machine these large workpieces efficiently and with process reliability, an integrated spindle motor (ISM) is used on the main spindle. This synchronous ISM76 enables machining with RPMs up to 5,000 and has a capacity of max. 32 kW and 360 Nm at 40% duty cycle.

"By using the linear drive, we guarantee the customer maximum long-term accuracy during machining," said Harry Junger, MD of GILDEMEISTER Drehmaschinen. "In addition, the linear drive operates with high dynamics, which is reflected in fast rapid traverses of 100 m/min and an acceleration of 0.8 g. In connection with the large X-travel of 1,100 mm, the linear drive achieves loading and unloading times of seven to 10 seconds. DMG Mori / Seiki provides a warranty of 60 months for the linear drive."

The spindle is liquid-cooled for enhanced temperature stability. The spindle bearings with Ø130 mm diameter provide stability during machining. The linear guides were created in size 45, and Ø40 mm ball-thread drives are exclusively used.

The large work area with traverse paths of 1,100 mm in the X-axis and 300 mm Z-travel enable the machining of workpieces of up to Ø300 mm diameter and 210 mm height. Combined with the swing diameter of Ø340 mm, chucks up to a size of Ø315 mm can be used. The machine can be additionally equipped with a Y-axis, making off-center machining possible with its travel of Ø50 mm.

A 12-tool VDI 40 turret is standard, and can be optionally equipped with a tool drive for powered tools. For heavy machining, the machine can also be equipped with a VDI 50 turret for powered tools. This provides RPMs up to 4,000 and 27 Nm or 11.3 kW.

The optional VDI40 Direct Drive turret with TRIFIX interface features 10,000 RPM, 34 Nm and 14.2 kW. "This covers the entire range of possible machining, from non-ferrous metals to heavy machining," said Junger. "The speed range up to 10,000 RPM is very versatile. Firstly, the fast cutting speeds of state-of-the-art cutting tools can be fully used. Secondly, the turret enables usage of reduced tool units up to 4:1, whereby torques of up to 136 Nm are possible. The Direct Drive turret includes the TRIFIX precision quick-change interface for set-up times of less than 30 seconds and a repeat accuracy of <6 µm as standard."

Also optionally available is a 390 x 445 mm multifunction panel. This panel can be equipped with VDI holders and multi-spindle heads, milling spindles or other special units.

In addition to individually adapted automation technology by DMG / Mori Seiki Systems (e.g., integration of robots or linking of two or more machines), the standard module of the new CTV 315 linear already provides two flexible automations.

A prismatic frame conveyor belt features space for up to 52 workpieces (max. Ø80 mm workpiece diameter), or 13 workpieces up to Ø230 mm diameter. In addition, the 230 mm frames can be optionally extended for workpieces up to Ø300 mm. Twenty-six frames for workpieces up to Ø130 mm are also available for intermediate sizes. "The big advantage of this automation is clearly its flexibility," said Junger. "The frames are simply integrated into the automation chain. Furthermore, set-up of the prismatic frame conveyor automation is limited to entering the diameter of the unmachined workpiece and the workpiece height. The control is responsible for everything else, which enables the efficient application of this machine for small series as well."

The machine can also be equipped with a pallet conveyor belt. In terms of capacity, 24, 22 or 18 pallets in sizes Ø150, Ø180 or Ø230 mm are available.

In addition, the large X-axis travel of 1,100 mm enables two-track loading and unloading via a separate discharge belt, which is available for both automation versions. Integration of a workpiece turning system, as well as the position-oriented feeding of parts via insets or special pallets, are also possible.

For machine interlinking, the CTV 315 linear is available as right-hand or left-hand version at no extra cost (automation on right or left side).

The measuring probe is optionally positioned between the work area and the automation area. Here the workpieces can be measured in clamped condition. The measuring results are instantly fed back to the control and the tools are corrected.

One area of application of the new CTV 315 linear is in the field of serial production. "Here, customers are mostly interested in unit cost productivity as well as the space requirement of the manufacturing equipment. In both cases, the CTV 315 linear achieves absolute top values," said Junger. "The machine is ideally suited to large series, e.g., in the automotive industry. Here, the large work area combined with the large function plate enables usage of special aggregates. For example, differential housings, crown gears or compensating rings can be efficiently produced with this."

The number of available tools in the work area can be increased with a function plate. This enables the machining of different components without new set-ups. Furthermore, off-center machining with low-cost standard tools can be performed with the optional Y-axis.

The CTV 315 linear is equipped with Operate 4.5 on Siemens 840D solutionline. Operate 4.5 is the new system platform from DMG MORI for all machines with Siemens control. Operate 4.5 comprises the entire automation technology of a machine tool, from the drives to the CNC control. Furthermore, Operate 4.5 provides users with a standard user interface for all technologies.

The standard machine version has an integrated 15" SLIMline panel that can be swiveled towards the work area. Regardless of whether NC programs are installed directly via network or the machine is directly programmed with Shop Turn 3 G, up to 60% of programming time can be saved with the (optional) exclusive technology cycles, according to the company. Optionally, the CTV 315 linear is also available with Transline and thus suited to applications in the automotive industry.
