Pressure-Sensitive Paper Tests Nipping Systems

Menges Roller Proof-Nip Impression Paper

Menges Roller Company now offers an improved nip impression paper, the Menges Proof-Nip Impression Paper.

"Menges developed this specialty product as a solution to a problem for converters: nip rollers are not always even, causing headaches for operators because the nipping system then generates uneven nip pressure," said a company spokesperson. "This problem has traditionally been difficult to diagnose for equipment operators. Usually one or both of the rollers involved in the nip system need to be modified, but determining the measurements and specifications for these modifications was a complex process.

"This new material simplifies the process of correctly diagnosing the nip problem and accurately measures the roller modification increments needed to remedy the problem."

Menges Proof-Nip is designed to be inserted directly between the two nipping rollers, allowing the machine to make a pressurized impression on the paper. This paper, which is ink-impregnated and sensitive to pressure, then generates clear and visible markings that indicate the exact areas along the nip system where nip pressure is too high or too low.

"With the impressed paper, Menges engineers then use mathematic formulas to calculate the exact amount of crown, reverse-crown or other roller modification required to generate perfectly-uniform nip pressure across the entire nip surface," said the spokesperson.

Roll crowning is the process of creating an arc on a roller surface; a reverse crown is a concave profile. Crown profiles are measured in thousandths of an inch, and a very small crown can make a big difference in nip pressure, according to the company.

"Menges Roller has specialized computer-assisted machines that create very precise crown / reverse-crown profiles on hardshell (steel) rollers, as well as rubber and silicone covered rollers," said the spokesperson. "Nipping systems, and the related 'squeegee' set-ups, are widely used in thin-gage steel coating and converting operations. Uneven nip pressure (and rolls with improper crown profiles) can causes many problems, including uneven coating, poor laminating and overall poor product quality, which results in wasted time and material."
