High-Mix/Low-Volume Manufacturing

The Matsuura MAM72-70V offers extended unmanned operation, complex 5-axis machining and versatile functionality in all machining environments. The MAM72-70V is IoT ready, delivering measurable remote and real time monitoring of the machine status, condition and performance.

"Matsuura's high-mix/low-volume manufacturing solutions can build fiscal resilience in challenging economic periods," said a company spokesperson. "With the deficiency in skilled labor to operate CNC machines, automation provides the potential for expanding production and increasing profit, while decreasing employment costs. Matsuura's original automation and unmanned running systems provide solutions for organizations by utilizing working hours effectively."

"Matsuura's customers often run the high-mix, low-volume components that require more engineering and set-up during the business day. Then, they change over to the unmanned production, where the pallets in the system run all night," said Matsuura USA President Craig St. John.

ATC tool magazines and APC pallet systems on Matsuura 5-axis machining centers allow the machines to automatically continue production without human intervention, even during the night.

"Matsuura is an innovator in the development of high-speed machining and the manufacture of automated, unmanned high accuracy CNC machine tools built from the ground up to run unattended," said the spokesperson. "Matsuura's line of MAM72 models fit this application perfectly." MAM stands for Matsuura Advanced Manufacturing and 72 is the total hours in a weekend.

While some companies have shifted to outsourcing practices to cut production costs, other companies have adapted for more flexibility in their manufacturing processes to manage costs and broaden their customer bases.

"With cost down pressures on all manufacturers, the need for reliable automated machining is increasing globally in both established and emerging markets," St. John explained.

In small lot production, elimination of set-up time is the primary goal. "Shaving a few seconds or even minutes of cycle time per part when making 20 or 30 parts is insignificant," said the spokesperson. "The savings and the profit improvement come from reducing set-up time from hours to zero and by running parts unattended overnight and on weekends."

"High-mix/low-volume is the rule in many industries. Successful shops are already implementing small lot size automation and these innovative companies are hard to compete with using conventional approaches and conventional machines," St. John said.
