Manual Lathe Product Line Expands

Summit Machine Tool has traditionally carried two categories of manual lathes: small/shop lathes and big bore/big swing lathes. The smaller manual lathes have a spindle bore of up to 4.1" and the larger lathes have spindle bores starting at 6.1". Summit recently introduced the 30-5 series with a large 5.1" spindle bore to maximize workpiece flexibility and bridge the gap between their lightweight and heavyweight categories.

With the larger spindle bore, the 30-5 series offers more extended features than any other lathes in Summit's lightweight lathe category. Previously, the largest center distance available was 160". The 30-5 series now offers center distances from 80" up to 200". The 30-5 series provides a larger 29.9" swing over the bed and a wider swing over the gap at 37.4". This lathe series also features a precision chrome alloy spindle, a removable gap, single-lever control for feeds and rapids and a two-speed tailstock for faster set-ups.

In addition to expanded machine features, the 30-5 series offers many built-in safety features. The safety clutch in the apron kicks out the feed and the feed/threading safety interlock eliminates the simultaneous engagement of the feed and threading motion. The machine can be controlled by either the headstock- or apron-mounted spindle control lever. The emergency stop is located on the apron for quick access and the headstock controls are conveniently located for ease of operation.

"These European-built 30-5 manual lathes are made for long-lasting accuracy," said a company spokesperson. The all cast iron construction provides a solid foundation for vibration absorption and rigidity, plus it features hardened and precision ground bedways. The headstock is cross-ribbed for added strength and stability. These machines also include anti-friction mounted shafts and balanced components for improved precision.

Summit Machine includes accessories with every machine purchase. Accessories included with the 30-5 series are as follows: standard and extra capacity steady rests with rollers, follow rest, thread dial, coolant system, taper attachment, 16" 3 jaw chuck with solid jaws, carriage stop, work light, full-length splash guard and service wrenches and spanners.
