AmTTech Technology Event August 30

AmTTech, a CNC machine tool distributor located in Houston, TX, will host an event showcasing the latest developments in cutting tool and machine tool technology. Event attendees can learn how digital connectivity will shape the future machine shop through the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). WFL Milltrun Technologies will be presenting the M80 MILLTURN/3,000 mm (118.11") with a milling performance of 58 kW (79 HP).

Sandvik Coromant will show its CoroPlus platform, and attendees will see live machining demonstrations with a Silent Tools+ boring bar. Sensors embedded in the boring bar provide the user with a live process view and insight into what is happening at the cutting edge. "The Silent Tools+ bar diameter is 100 mm at a 16xd overhang ratio, a ratio that has previously been unachievable to machine," said a company spokesperson. The boring bar will be integrated into a special WFL prismatic toolholder, which includes a data interface. With CoroPlus technology, technological information and tool status can be transmitted to the control system or a tablet. During processing, the machine operator is provided with pertinent information regarding temperature, deviations, background noises, vibrations and tool load. In this way, the chip removal process can be optimized, protecting both tool and workpiece from damage. In addition, the complete process can be logged in full. This technology is typically used in the aviation industry, for example in the manufacturing of drive shafts, or for general machining of long, slim workpieces.

Attendees can also learn about Sandvik Coromant's CoroTurn Prime and PrimeTurning, which is a completely new turning concept, including method and tools.

The machine tool highlighted at this event will be WFL's M80 MILLTURN. Attendees will see the capabilities of this large, versatile machine that is suitable for the oil and gas and aerospace industries. One important aspect of the M80 MILLTURN is the variety that can be created from the extensive and enhanced WFL modular machine concept. This approach enables the ideal configuration to be assembled from the standard tool kit for every customer requirement. As a result, it is possible to combine a wide range of machining systems on the upper and lower slides with all of the internal machining solutions available from WFL. All center-to-center distances (except 1,000 mm/39.37") are also available in a double spindle version. "The machine concept is based on minimized tool and workpiece distances from the slide guideways and wide guideway distances, resulting in optimum rigidity and ideal geometries," said the spokesperson. The machine control is the Siemens Sinumeric 840D sl in combination with the new Sinamic drives. The 19" monitor, the height and tilt angle of which are adjustable, is particularly user-friendly.

At the heart of the machine is the new Turning-Boring-Milling unit, which in terms of performance data and component sizing is designed to handle very heavy-duty machining applications. "The innovative design of the bottom guideways means that the maintenance-prone telescopic covers are no longer required," said the spokesperson. "The minimum distance between a steady rest slide and tailstock or between two adjacent steady rest slides is just 50 mm (1.97 inches), resulting in much more stable chip conditions than on conventional machines." In the standard version of the machine, the steady rest slide and tailstock come equipped with their own NC drives and can therefore be positioned independently and simultaneously.

The tool magazine is easily accessible from the front and features a compact, stable and practically maintenance-free design. The dynamic tool shuttle with rack and pinion drive carries a tool changer with all but linear axes, thus avoiding any rotationally induced centrifugal effects. Tools up to 35 kg (77.16 lbs.) in weight and 900 mm (35.43") in length can be changed safely and quickly. For heavy-duty internal machining applications, either a two-pocket pick-up magazine or a 15-pocket drill rod changer is available for tools up to 1,700 mm (66.93") and 2,500 mm (98.43") in length, respectively.
