Flex Wheel for Finishing Contoured Aluminum
June 1, 2016
Contoured surfaces add time and complexity when it comes to finishing welds. Many aluminum end products, like ship hulls and storage tanks, involve contours that must meet finish specifications. Achieving these finishes frequently involves multiple steps.
"Fabricators faced with finishing contoured surfaces can optimize the process by: minimizing the number of passes and reducing the number of different wheels needed to grind and blend a weld," said a Rex-Cut spokesperson.
Rex-Cut's Type 27 Max Flex wheel is designed for this type of surface. Instead of fighting contours, this flexible Type 27 wheel smoothly grinds and blends along the surface. "The flexible action allows Max Flex to 'hug' welds, providing efficient metal removal with each pass. The result is fewer passes to achieve the desired finish," said the spokesperson.
"Max Flex also reduces finishing aluminum welds from two or three steps, to just one," said the spokesperson. This disc is constructed with cotton fiber abrasive material that is embedded with aluminum oxide grain, allowing the disc to remove aluminum welds quickly while leaving a number 4 finish. In addition, this specialty abrasive material makes Max Flex naturally non-loading on aluminum.
Whether the required finish is desired for cosmetic reasons or to meet RA specifications, Max Flex wheels provide flexibility.
Type 27 Max Flex wheels are available in 4-1/2", 5" and 7" diameter sizes in 36 and 54 grit. Visit rexcut.com/t27maxflex for more information.
