Renishaw affiliate company RLS has introduced a series of three high-performance miniature magnetic encoders for embedded OEM motion control applications. Designed for high-volume medical applications, optics positioning, robot control, 3-D printers, gimbals and hand held devices, the miniature encoders come in four different shapes and provide linear resolution up to 0.244 µm, or 753,664 CPR for rotary applications. Renishaw will exhibit these encoders at several upcoming shows.
The encoders consist of a miniature sensor and a magnetic scale or a ring. The sensors are available in a potted housing or as PCB board level sensors. Position information can be output in incremental quadrature TTL or RS422, as well as parallel in SSI and BiSS-C formats, with the option of a unique or periodic reference mark. "The industrialized designs bring long-life, wear-free, low-inertia advantages to difficult applications and harsh environments," said a company spokesperson.
The encoder series includes:
RoLin - for integration into small motion systems: a packaged magnetic position encoder designed for either linear or rotary position feedback. RoLin is available as a "PCB-ready" readhead for integration into small motion system designs. It is also available as a standalone packaged readhead with flex cable connection. RoLin's readhead can provide interpolation rates up to 13-bit, as well as fault monitoring, with speeds up to 40 meters/sec, depending on resolution.
RLC - two designs for direct PCB installation or cable soldering: this board-level magnetic encoder has been specifically designed for integration into high volume OEM systems. "High speed, high reliability and high resolution coupled with large installation tolerances allow this encoder to be installed quickly and cost effectively. Magnetic scale technology ensures that position feedback is maintained even if the scale is severely contaminated," said the spokesperson.
RLB - with FPC flat cable connector for higher volume OEMs: similar to RLC, this encoder's FPC connection is designed to allow OEMs the freedom to use a cable and connector, rather than solder assembly, which is usually reserved for higher volume "deeper integration" OEMs.
The RLS range of magnetic encoders is designed and manufactured by Renishaw's associate company RLS d.o.o. Renishaw supports these products with a worldwide network and local inventory stocking for system developers. The products can also be ordered and purchased directly at rlsdirect.com
