New Expanded Lineup of Radial Arm Drills

KNUTH Machine Tools has introduced its expanded lineup of radial arm drills, the "R" series. According to the company, KNUTH now provides a series of machines that range from a 1.3" drilling capacity with a 32" spindle to column distance all the way to a 3.94" drilling capacity size with a spindle to column distance of 124".

"Prior to investing time and resources into expanding our radial arm drill line, KNUTH devoted a considerable amount of energy in assessing the future of the radial arm drill," said a company spokesperson. "The questions of 'Should a company invest in updating the old radial arm drill?' and 'What is its future in the market?' were both raised and investigated. The resulting data showed that the radial arm drill will have a bright future for many years to come. This is especially true weighed against the fact that the machining alternatives to radial arm drills are few, and tend to be larger, much more expensive machines."

In light of these market trends, KNUTH offers new features and improvements on its new "R" series radial arm drills, including the following:

  • An infinitely variable speed spindle gearbox, in the case of the R-60: 38 - 2,000 RPM (2,000 RPM provides the proper rotational speed to run a drill bit as small as 1/8"); the R-100 model is a 22-step direct gear drive drill head with 8 - 1,000 RPM
  • An individually adjustable multidisc-reversing overload clutch on the main spindle, which reduces high torque forces when the spindle is reversed, thereby increasing the life on the spindle drive gears
  • An adjustable drilling depth stop which improves the hole-to-hole depth accuracy
  • Three electric motors: the main spindle motor, horizontal arm lift motor and coolant motor (the R-80 and R-100 drills also come standard with an additional drill head positioning motor)
  • Gear sets have oil bath-submerged lubrication, while the rest of the machine has a central lubrication system
  • An automatic positive electromagnetic lock on the horizontal arm increases operator safety in the event the arm is not locked prior to drilling
  • Automatic quill feed ranging from 0.0024 - 0.126/rev
  • An excessive counterweight base (the R-60 weighs in at 8,400 lbs.)
  • The precision machined cube table comes standard on all KNUTH radial arm drills
  • The drill head and column can be clamped/released, either together or separately, via the control switch.
