New Internal Grip Collet Chuck

Northfield Precision Instrument Corporation, a provider of precision workholding chucks, has introduced its new internal grip collet chuck. "This collet chuck was custom designed for one of our customers to clamp the I.D. of their valve balls," said a company spokesperson. The collet is a dead length collet with a removable split part stop - which is made into two pieces and hinged - to locate the back side of the workpiece and is removed after clamping the workpiece and prior to grinding the workpiece.

This chuck is used in a valve ball grinder. The ball is approximately 6" in diameter. "The customer needed to locate and stop the ball axially on the chuck, so Northfield provided a removable spacer (locator/stop) behind the ball (between the ball and chuck) for axial location," said the spokesperson. "The locator needed to be removable to allow the grinding wheel (cup) access around the top and bottom of the ball."

Northfield Precision Instrument designs and manufactures air chucks for any lathe, boring machine, grinder or VMC. Models include through-hole, high-speed and quick-change. Chucks are available in SAE or metric, in sizes from 3" (76 mm) to 18" (457 mm). "Accuracies of 0.001" to 0.00001" (0.254 m) are guaranteed," said the spokesperson. Custom workholding chucks and jaws are also available.
