As a part of its expansion strategy and in line with its vision to become a top producer of horizontal boring mills in the global market, Fermat has announced the initiation of its new assembly hall in Brno, Czech Republic.
Fermat now occupies a land area of 357,361 sq. ft. / 33,200 sq. m. The new assembly hall is spread over 39,826 sq. ft. / 3,700 sq. m and supports production of more than 110 machines in a year.
Highlights of this completely functional hall include a ceiling height of 62.3' / 19 m, the highest in Fermat's history. This allows the Fermat technicians to assemble large Y-axis columns with headstock vertical travel over 26' / 8 m.
In the past year, Fermat has continued to invest in new machinery and equipment to support increased sales demand. The principal owner of the company, Jiri Ferenc, said, "One of the basic requirements for the production of quality machine tools is the machining accuracy of the production equipment. All mechanical parts of our products are machined at Fermat facilities. We are using our own boring mill products, especially our table type model WFT 13, for turning, boring and milling. In addition, for the production of our precision spindles, we are using CNC cylindrical grinders manufactured by our sister company, Fermat Machine Tool.
Last year was a record, not just for sales but also for capital investments, which were over $7,200,000.
In February last year, Fermat installed a new 5-axis universal machining center with a rotary tilting table - Hermle C 50 with ATC and robotic pallet shuttle. The working area of the machine is 39.3" x 39.3" x 29.5" / 1,000 x 1,100 x 750 mm.
Another investment last year was a carousel type CNC grinder for O.D., I.D. and face grinding. It allows precise grinding of rotating parts up to a diameter of 500 mm. These machines, which can hold 1 micron accuracy, are primarily used for production of components used on the various Fermat milling heads produced by Fermat.
Fermat is currently finishing the installation of a new lathe, TT 75 of TOS Celakovice. It is a multifunction turning center with milling capability. In total there are 9 controlled axes. The maximum workpiece dimensions are: diameter 29.5" / 750 mm, length 157" / 4,000 mm, weight 6,613 lbs. / 3,000 kg. It will be used for the production of spindles and carriers.
Additional technology recently purchased includes a robot laser hardening system. The significant benefit reported by Fermat is that required surface hardness is achieved at much lower heating of the entire component, thus the deformation is negligible compared to the conventional hardening.
New purchases and replacement of machines will also continue this year with the aim of higher productivity and quality of all machined parts.
