Taylor-Winfield Technologies' Assistant Chief Engineer, Mike Prokop, addressed The American Welding Society's Professional Program at FABTECH 2013 with information on a new process to flash weld Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS).
Prokop's topics of discussion included new techniques for coil joining AHSS "automotive grade" materials, recent improvements in machine controls, Taylor-Winfield's patented Force Freeze flash welding process and machine upgrades. This new flash welding process extends the range of material capable of being joined using conventional flash butt welders, eliminates "checker boarding" and minimizes the formation of oxides, carbides and nitrides which can often disrupt the weld region and cause weld joint failure. This process can be applied to flash welders being used in pickle line tandem cold rolling mills, continuous pickle lines, coil build-up lines, wheels, band saw blades, pipe, tubing and rail lines.
This new welding process can be added to any existing flash welding machine by a controls upgrade. The components included in this upgrade are capable of controlling processes ranging from Forced Freeze to machine control. They also provide the ability to communicate with Level 2 information systems. This system, integrated with any existing hydraulics, will afford the capability to weld the new AHSS materials required by today's market.
