Ganesh offers high-speed 5-axis technology for 5-sided machining. According to Ganesh, advantages of 5-sided machining include reduced cycle time, better surface finish, fewer set-ups and better part accuracy.
Ganesh 5-axis VFM-5A/8 and 5A-12 machines, with 8" and 12" platter diameters, orient the workpieces to allow more productive milling operations. "This allows greater access to part surfaces, reducing the number of tool changes, set-ups and part handling operations," said a company spokesperson.
The Ganesh machines provide 680 block look-ahead and 1,417 IPM in X, Y and Z axes for efficient metal removal with enhanced surface finish. Standard is 1,000 PSI coolant to flush out chips. "No more little scallops when using a flat bottom end mill," said the spokesperson. "There will be less labor required for hand following machining."
Workpieces can be positioned automatically to allow operations on multiple sides of the part in one setting. "This reduces handling and subsequent stack-up errors from multiple fixtures," said the spokesperson. "Complex parts can be machined completely in a single set-up. Fewer fixtures are needed. Part positioning and repositioning errors are eliminated. Fixturing costs and inventory costs are reduced. Less part handling equates to less scrap and lost time."
Ganesh VFM series 5-axis CNCs use Heidenhein scales with 50 nanometer resolution. "This provides accurate interpolation and axis positioning," said the spokesperson. "Premium cross-roller linear ways provide greater stiffness and load carrying. Feature-to-feature accuracy is improved because the same zero or datum reference frame is used throughout the manufacturing process. The machine spindle is a high-performance 12,000 RPM Ganesh Big-Plus spindle. This insures greater tool life and enhanced tool cutting performance.
"Even simple machine operations can be accomplished with greater efficiency. Drilling a series of holes at different compound angles is time-consuming. With a 5-axis machine, the workpiece can be oriented along the correct axis for each hole automatically. Automatic positioning of workpieces in one set-up also reduces the number of tool changes required on a part since one tool can be kept in the cut for multiple operations."
